Is there a time when Volkswagens for the US weren't made in Mexico? Or I guess I'm looking for the date when they started being made in Mexico.

Only some American VWs are made in Mexico. My brother's GTI was made in Wolfsburg Germany

Oh crap. I really thought all American Volkswagens were made in Mexico, thats why the reliability is so bad. I feel now that I know less about this than I thought. <_<

Ok, so then my question would be which Volkswagens are made in Mexico and when did they start?

You can check where your car was made from the plate on the driver door. Usually the first year of a new model they are imported from Europe usually direct from Germany. Take for example the 99.5 Jetta the first of the mk 4, although the mk 5 was rolled out in America before any other country thus never needing to be imported. If you are looking for VW's from Germany you have to look for first runs and limited or special editions ie phaeton

Up until 1988, Rabbits/Golfs and Jettas were made in New Stanton, PA. From then until the late '90s, nearly all US market VWs came from Germany.

Ahh.. interesting. I'm just trying to compile my list possible cars I may look into buying (big list), I want to put mid/late 90s Golfs and Jettas on my list.

Just because a car is built in Mexico does not mean its bad build quality most of the best Fords are being built in Mexico now.

I remembered hearing somewhere (probably just a random comment from someone here) that because American Volkswagens are made in Mexico that is why their reliability is so poor here whereas (and this is almost completely based off Top Gear and Fifth Gear) they are very reliable in Europe.

Lots of reliable cars get imported from Germany and turn out to be utter crap in the US. Ford's Merkur brand for example.

Brazilians may be to blame for the XR4Ti, but for the Scorpio there's no excuse.

You have to keep in mind that one bad batch of cars can completely ruin a companies Image. I think a few people will recall that Jaguars reliability was only second to Lexus for the last few years, and has been since about 95 (depending on model) but all you still hear is how jags are the most unreliable cars in the world, which isn't at all true.

If you want to know the truth about any car then check owners clubs.

Indeed. That is probably the best advice you can give to someone looking for a car.

They know EVERYTHING about their car and give the best advice.

As far as i know, the break down is pretty much the Jetta are made in Mexico. While the GTI/GLI/Golf (actually i am not sure on the GLI), and Passat where made in Germany. The other cars, i dont know. I can assume the Touareg is made in Germany as they are shared with Porsche. And as for the Vans, i dont know.
And this is for the US Market, while other markets will get cars that might be built in other places (like China which almost get all China made).

Apparently, the Touareg is made in *Slovakia*, not die Vaterland.

The New Beetle is Hecho en Mexico - Puebla, Puebla, Mexico to be exact:

The Golf? It's Hecho en Brazil, save for special editions. Yes, even the GTI:

VIN decoding - 9B = Volkswagen de Brasil - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number

The current Passat appears to be the only model of the current lineup that's actually Made In Germany. See current VINs and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat

My Jetta is made in Mexico, something I didn't realize until after I got it. It's a nice car, when it's working. It has a mystery misfire in cylinder number 4 and we weren't able to get it inspected unless we could get it fixed because they have a regulation that says you can't get a car inspected if it's check engine light is on. We thought it would be a lot to get it fixed, everything else has so far, and we didn't have the money at the time so we let it sit until we did have money and in that few months it completely fell apart. The starter seized up at some point, we had started it not to long before and within a couple days it died. That caused the battery to die with our attempts to start it and the cold weather too. Also if it if it rains a lot it gets hard to shift for some reason, we had to spray some WD40 on the shifting mechanism. Also the electrics are known to be a bit bonkers in these cars at times, if your unlucky you'll get one that will have the alarm going off at totally random times. Oh and the battery for my car isn't carried by any auto parts store in town and we have close to ten different auto parts chains in town, we had to match up the shape of the battery with correct polarity and cranking amps. Also almost every part cost a load of money to get, except brake calipers which were weirdly cheap compared to all the other parts we put on it. Also, yes again, the thing seems to rust like it's going out of style, it's only a 10 year old car and just about everything under it rusts like crazy and that's why we had to change the brake caliper since it rusted it's self to death.

It was briefly alluded to earlier, but your best bet
is finding a VIN number decoder.
That sort of crap is always included in it.

excellent, off to search for a German Volkswagen! (not really, not yet anyway)

Spectre and I spoke about this on the IRC Chan and I was right in reference to the new MKV Golfs/Rabbits as they are made in Germany. The old MKIV (both Jetta and Golf) for the US market it seems where made in Brazil or Mexico.

Speaking of mexican volkswagens, i heard they made the original beetle in mexico well into the 2000's.

Would getting one of these be a good idea, and if so, how would i go about getting one in america?

The idea of a 50's car with factory modern air conditioning and CD player is just too badass not to consider...

I personally believe you should be able to bring one over no problem, considering they were sold here a million years ago, and this one is almost new.

but it probably wont happen because this country doesn't want you to have any fun
