Shaking in idle? Clean your butterfly valve.

My Ibiza was shaking in idle for some weeks now, so I decided to take the
butterfly valve off the engine and clean it.

This is how it looked from underneath after ~94.000km in 4 years, most of it Autobahn runs.

As you can see, the small slits to let air pass in idle are completely full of oil grease. This is because my engine has a little construction error, when the Oil gets all hot it gases out a bit and this "oil mist" is pushed through the crankshaft ventilation opening right into the air intake, as it is meant to burn that oil mist.

I used some ethanol, a toothbrush and some old socks to clean it (important: do NOT use acetone, it washes out the bearings), re-fitted it and let the engine run again. My car re-configures the butterfly valve automatically, it is possible that you need some OBD2 interface for other newer cars.

This is how it looked from the underside when I finished cleaning it:

The engine now runs much smoother in idle again. Easy. :)

I think that?s the throttle...?
and you may want to consider a catch tank...

FYI, most makers say you should clean that out at least every 30,000 miles or two years in the US.

well yes... but still, what you?ve been cleaning is the throttle... don?t confuse all the non-germans...
