So yeah, I'll be boarding a plane next Thu and flying over to Amsterdam to hang out with BlaRo and a friend of his. I'll probably also spend some time hitting the car museums and covering them for work, so the time tables are quite flexible on my part on the weekend.

So, FG people of the Netherlands, who's up for a cup of coffee and some forum banter?

Not a good date for me. I'll see if I can join you on Saturday, but I have a birthday party to attend in the evening...

I'm probably in, i could take Friday earlier off. :) ;)

too bad, that the cool stuff is still closed like the Dolphinarium in Harderwijk (closed till end of April) or the Zandvoort racetrack (maintainance :( ) at the Dunes.both within 1 hour reach from Amsterdam.

anyone any ideas ?

I came to the conclusion that going to Amsterdam and back on Saturday is too much. Therefore, I plan to join you on Friday evening, directly from work (I hope to be able to close shop earlier than usual) and leave again at around 6 or 7 pm on Saturday.

At which ho(s)tel are you guys staying?

don't know yet, kinda depends on whatkind of activitys we are planning, if we stay mostly in Amsterdam ... this would be my choice

http://www.hotels.nl/de/amsterdam/tulipart/?arrival=2013-02-22&departure=2013-02-23

pro: free Internet, near City center, underground parking, bus connection to the city center in front of hotel
contra: breakfast expensive, parking price is quite Okay if you count that they don't charge for Wifi (normal cost up to 10 ? a day), also seen worse (WTC hotel 29,50? for parking + Internet Fee for rooms with no doors in front of the toilet !)

since you and i have the same timing schedule, we could share a Hotel room (description says 2 single beds) and split the costs. But don't know if you are comfortable with that. Or does the local(s) have a better ideas ?:)

If possible, I'd prefer to stay at the same place as public and BlaRo, for practical reasons. But the place you linked doesn't look bad.

I plan to leave my car at a park+ride as described here and take public transport from there. Cost: ?8.

Guys, we are staying at the Cocomama. http://www.cocomama.nl/

BlaRo says we have a dinner reservation for three on Friday at 6pm, so if you guys will want to join us afterwards for drinks / pub / stuff it would prolly work best.

The cocomama website tellls me that's fully booked for that night. :(

Re arrival time/dinner: I think 6 pm is too early for me, so checking into my hotel first and join you then will probably be best.

Re public transport: ?42, as Bobele linked, is too steep just for getting around. It depends on our plans for Saturday whether that card is a valid option.

DanRoM: Yeah, I meant that we'll be occupied from 6pm to, what, 7.30 or 8, depending how long it will take us at the restaurant. After that it's free rein.

I'll probably need some kind of a public transport chip card solution, I'll look into it. Car museums are #1 on the museum interest list, so any free entry to any of them is a plus.

Damn.. as much as I'd love to join this minimeet, that just doesn't fit my PTO-schedules and finances with Geneva less than 2 weeks later. :(

Louwman was already on the shortlist (fun fact, my employer does the IT helldesk there, no I sadly cannot get us tickets). I've looked into Donkervoort factory tours, but I'm not sure we can arrange anything on such a short notice. Another car museum is closed for now, and a few others closed in the past few years due to lack of interest. Sadly, we're not a very car minded country. There's the DAF museum in Eindhoven, which is a bit away from Amsterdam but still doable (about 1h). Other notable things about The Netherlands are cheese (Alkmaar), our dikes and other water works (Zeeland) and some great architecture. If you're into it, Madurodam has miniatures of most of the landmarks here.

I've been to Madurodam, it was fun but probably best seen once :) Louwman is probably the best bet, unless I can magically get to Brummen.
