Mass Effect 3

Like the Destiny Ascension (did that survive Soverign's attack on the Citadel in ME1?)

It only survived if it survived, otherwise it didn't survive. Yeesh, it was only the huge decision at the end of the game.

Does anyone else remember Commander Anderson (or someone else) in ME1 complaining that the Normandy cost more than a flagship battleship would have cost? So it's pretty darned small.

Also, according to the Mass Effect wiki, the Destiny Ascension has a crew of over 10,000, three times the largest human battleship. So the largest human battleship has got a crew of 3,000 and change. For comparison, the Normandy (SR-1 and SR-2) appears to have a crew of two or three dozen (from walking around it in-game).

Yeah, the Normandy is a stealthy reconaissance ship that's capable of serving as a platform for special operations on the ground (i.e. what you do in ME).
Sure, it's well armed and capable in combat, but that's not what it's about. It's not a superweapon that can blow everything in its path to smithereens, ideally it's supposed to not engage in combat at all. It's so expensive because it's a highly specialised, high tech gadget, and not a simple, brute weapon.
With that design, it's really not suited for mass production or large scale engagements.

Understandable, if anything i meant as in that a series of other ships in the same class as Normandy. Not just one specific ship, i wouldn't mind seeing some bigger ships either. Like the Destiny Ascension (did that survive Soverign's attack on the Citadel in ME1?) or other big ships.

damn, if i had the money i'd be buying that Normandy SR2 litho. in fact i'm still waiting for someone in BioWare to take the hint and produce a actual model for the Normandy SR2 or even the SR1, i'm not picky. just gimme a Normandy Model!

You mean something like this?

Goddammit, I'm broke enough, as it is!

Now you tempt me with ME2 memorabilia...

maybe that will be one of the ramifications in ME3, if you didn't keep the Destiny Ascension alive, it won't show up to kick some reaper ass... providing they haves asses to kick.

I'm truly interested in how ME3 would go. After the mess Sovereign caused by himself I have no idea how a full on battle against all Reapers would go except the complete annihilation of all species in the galaxy... I'm really hoping they won't gayishly end it with some "oh, EMPs kill them!" move... I just want it to end well and I know if I was a ME writer I would have my work cut out for me.

i'm more worried that they are going to go down the Stargate SG-1 almighty weapon that can be found just in the nick of time. i think the phrase is "Deus Ex Machina" but i really want it to be resolved well and not in some stupid manner. However, since this is BioWare. i am more than happy that they are going to be able to come out with some plot that is just going to blow me away like the first 2 games did.

Both Normandies are designed as scout frigates with a crew of 20-30 (conversation with EDI lists the SR2's crew at 24). Their stealth systems let them do recon behind enemy lines and insert spec-ops teams into sensitive areas without being detected, but in fleet action they take the more traditional role of frigates. As frigates, they are intended to roam the battlefield in small packs of 6 or so frigates with the goal of harassing enemy dreadnoughts and battleships and/or finishing off other ships with their kinetic barriers disabled.

I think that mini-litho of the SR2 would make a lovely Xmas gift for myself, if I have the money to spare.

ME already has gone down the Deus Ex Machina route before.

Back door to the Citadel?

good point, didn't think of that one. i was just thinking of one on a bigger grander scale. like some device that opens a gateway to a black hole and sucks the reapers out. or it turns out that the Reapers were locked away by an even older race and they have some kind of method of helping the younger races.

The thing is, given how powerful the Reapers are (a single one took down the Destiny Ascension and half the Council's fleets), and given that there are literally hundreds of Reapers as powerful as that single Reaper on the way, I don't see how the good guys could win without using some sort of superweapon.

This is particularly true if the trailer is accurate, the Reapers reach during ME3 Earth, and start unleashing husks and presumably turning Earth's population into more husks. Zombie outbreak much?

I don't know if I'd call that a deus ex machina, as the Citadel-side conduit is visible (and remarked on, if you so choose) from the moment you set foot on the Citadel; you just don't know what it's for until the very end. A true deus ex is suddenly introduced when needed.

Though if you hadn't noticed the Citadel conduit before, it would certainly seem to be a DEM.

I see it as coming down to guerilla warfare. The Reapers attack, taking everyone by surprise (the Council did squash down any talk of the R-word), various races's armies meet in a secret location to coordinate hit-and-run attacks on a small amount (think 1-3) of Reapers at a time, and when the numbers are down to a more equal-to-favorable amount, launch a full-scale attack to either rid the galaxy of the Reapers, or die trying.

Why are we using spoiler tags?

Because we're discussing the ending of ME1 (at least that's part of the discussion) and at least one person in this thread hasn't played ME1 but is intending on doing so?

probably because we're determining how the ending of ME1 may affect the permutations of the ending of ME3. some might have not completed ME2 or don't want to know about what is coming with ME3.

On another note, I'm currently playing through the Overlord DLC for the first time, and I got to the TRULY GORGEOUS scenery that you explore in the Hammerhead. This is what all planet exploration should be like in ME3. All the upsides of the Mako exploration from ME1 (vast openness, gorgeous vistas, great atmosphere) without the downsides (clunky controls, time-consuming 5 mph driving).
