My impression is that the combination of briefly blinding drivers (as you can see in the GIF) and the illusion of a solid object suddenly appearing right in front of you makes this a less-than-ideal solution. On the other hand, you may be able to realise instantly what it is in real life... so has anyone seen this sort of thing in use?
Judging from the short sequence in the gif, it looks like this is being uses as a last resort, to stop drivers oblivious to all other signals. In that sense I get the feeling the blinding and it looking like a solid object are entirely intentional and actually contribute to the functioning of the tech.
That's actually a damn good idea. And pretty effective it seems. Now if we could get something like that for older drivers all driving on the wrong side of the freeways here...
