How would a wooden spoon on top of a pot stop water from boiling over? :dunno:

Maybe it'll stop the water boiling over only where the spoon is, but what about the rest of the pot where the spoon isn't?

the water will be heated from the center of the pan, and hence the center will be the highest point while boiling
if you break the surfacetension in the middle, the sides will never rice over the edge...

works for milk as well! weird thing is that it only works with a wooden spoon, a metal one doesn't do anything :dunno:
 
It has to do with the wooden fibers in the spoon. The surface of a metal spoon is too smooth.
 
Finally went to an airshow where this was able to turn up....... Too awesome just to be hidden away in the Awesome Aircraft Thread

 
Tell me about it. That last howl near the end gives me goosebumps. It's like the cry of a wounded dragon - just the sight of it's shadow on the sea made me think of "Reign of Fire".
