The Aviation Thread [Contains Lots of Awesome Pictures]

I really wish they would make a Chinook with full armament. Imagine one just hovering there raining down like 25mm shells from multiple guns. :D

That hole there is for a 75mm cannon. Takes out an unarmored ship in one shot.

Time to share, I have used US Military Aircraft Serial Numbers ? Joe Baugher?s Website for many years when I need or want to look up an old warbird. So, when you see a random picture like these or an old movie or visit a museum you can sometimes find out the history of the plane.
For the WWII aircraft especially, what happened to it?s sister planes built in the same batch.

Production batch:
42-32383/32532 North American B-25C-15 Mitchell
Aircraft featured in the picture above:
32511 to NEIAF as N5-149

Sister aircraft lost in conflict:
32503 converted to B-25G. With 321st BG, 447th BS shot down by AAA and ditched 8 mi N of Pizzo, Italy Aug 13, 1943. MACR 409.The MACR lists this as 42-42503.

MACR: Missing Aircraft Crew Report
SOC: Struck Off Charge (Scrapped after the war.)
NEIAF: Netherlands East Indies Air Force (East Indies = Indonesia & other former Dutch colonies)

Production batch:
44-8801/8900 Lockheed/Vega B-17G-85-VE Fortress
Aircraft featured in picture above:
8846 went in 1947 to 49th RS (later 7499th Support Sqn in West Germany) and used for ELINT missions along East German border and down Berlin corridors. To Ogden Air Material Area, Hill AFB, UT Feb 1953. SOC late 1954, and sold to Institut Geographique National of France Dec 1954 as F-BGSP. WFU in 1959 and stored. Transferred May 1985 to Fortress Toujours Volante and e-registered as F-AZDX and is still flying. Whilst with the IGN, spent some time in South Africa as ZS-DXM Departed Orly Oct 24, 2006 for new home at Saint-Yan

Hindenburg the biggest aircraft ever!!
Hell yeah!

Those things were epic. So ambitious and so dangerous! They're some of the largest moving objects ever made and they flew through the sky and were filled with hydrogen! So crazy. Definitely a high point in human innovation and... ballsyness. I've seen a number of documentaries about them and they still seem awe inspiring, even today. I can't imagine how it must have felt to see one flying overhead in the 1920's and 30's!

I mean, even their hangars are still impressive!

I really want the idea to be re-visited. There has to be a safer way of making something like that, or even better.

You've got to wonder, if they'd had access to Helium what state of development would airships be in today? Would it even still be the biggest?
