What do you guys think (so far obviously)

My vote is a tie between google earth and youtube.

skype.

eta: or my friend's 3 year old son Ethan. Coolest most awesomest little human being ever.

I try to be as generalized as I can when pondering questions along these lines. I would say the greatest thing so far is the availability of information. When you look at our technological advances in civilizations as a whole, it breaks down to two factors: energy & information consumption. Obviously, energy is currently a serious limiting resource and will continue to be so until we harness fusion or geothermal energy (the physics for wind and solar just don?t hold any merit). What's astonishing is that our needs for information are growing exponentially. We are demanding more and faster information.

It's too soon to say...

But for me it's Internet speed itself. It's amazing how fast you can get data somewhere. Not long ago it would have been faster to bring it personally.

The internet is for porn.

Just being able to be on the Internet 24/7, if I want.

I think Stephen Fry summed it up best in a program on last week about the internet. Being able to carry the sum of all human knowledge and history in the palm of your hand with a mobile phone is something that truly just makes me think the human race can make giant leaps forward.
Other than actually proving that the human race can leave the boundaries of our planet, i don't hold out much hope. I'm still pissed that the Shuttle fleet is being retired and there is nothing to replace it, along with the Constellation program. It feels like when Concorde was retired. Its like a giant step backwards and as a Human race, we should always be moving forwards.

If I wanted to nominate an Internet-related thing, yeah, readily available broadband access would be it - because all the general technical foundations are from the last century. And no, no single application deserves to be called "the greatest thing of the century"
Not long ago it would have been faster to bring it personally.
Fun fact: In my first semester of studying computer science, one exam included the task of calculating whether the transport of x amount of data between two given points was faster by lorry or by DSL line.

Same thing it's been every other century.

Boobs.
