Random Thoughts (Political Edition)

My problem is that I don't like the policies of the tories (I'm not calling them anything else), and I don't like the smug bastards that run labor. You guys need a new Attlee, I guess.

Combine a 50s keynsian tory for economics with a Roy Jenkins sort of chap for home office policy, sprinkle some realist tendencies from Wilson and add in a small piece of Thatcher to make things move.

Over 8000 police officers protested yesterday because of the current situation in this country, caused by slicing 25% (in reality it varies from case to case, but it adds up to more than 25%) of salaries overall and the fraudulent passing of that pension law. They gathered outside the presidential building and shouted all manner of slogans against the president and the ruling party.

Today, the president announced that he would be dispensing with the police and the gendarmes (no, not the French ones) for escort duties.

I think this country is headed for the garbage bin of history in a matter of a few months.

The Tories have been rather preoccupied with the budget balancing and debt reduction.

The only thing they have pushed through so far is the Education Bill, which allows Academies and ?Free Schools? to be set up. Similar to those is Sweden, we were told.

Reducing the interference of local authorities, could be a good idea but they are optional anyway and as yet only a few Schools have shown much interest.

I think there will be trouble with ?Free Schools? if religious groups want to set them up and are allowed to teach kids dogma, creationism and other rubbish.

I like the sound of your political Frankenmonster.

Look what the education system produces in N. Ireland - woa success!

Where happy members of different christian sects go arm in arm gambolling up to school happy in the knowldege of each others traditions and views and there is no conflict of any sort what so ever. ?

Just imagine if they had to live in different enclaves and went to separate schools playing different sports even so that they never ever meet one another. ? Now that would be stupid.

Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson. But it's ok, 'cause they're in a Jaaaaaaag.

CNN documentary about Poles who rediscover their lost family history has unexpected results: Neo-Nazi Couple Find Out They're Jewish. Muahahaha. :D

If this is true:

"I'm not saying that I don't have regrets but it's not something that I walk around and lash myself over... I feel sorry for those that I beat up," Pawel said. "But I don't hold a grudge against myself."

This guy is absurd...

Both 33, they've now embraced their Jewish identity and are active in their local orthodox synagogue.

When you are a believer, you are a believer. It doesn't matter if you believe in racism, judaism, creationism or the Miami Dolphins. You will still be thinking exactly the same. At best it would be something that doesn't push you towards beating old women, homosexuals or immigrants.

Stop talking like Glen Beck, countries don't fall over in a matter of months. :p

Let's say I'm no fan of tories after Maggie. I'm not a fan of labor after Maggie either, though.

It would work.

i often seem to be the only one who actually liked Tony Blair. i honestly thought he did a good job.
my biggest complaint with Ed Miliband though is his image. He always looks like he's got nothing between those ears (ok, politicans have about as much of a iq as a jar of peanut butter). i seem him on tv and he always has a expression on his face that his brain is barely struggling to figure out how to breathe. in a media where image is everything (body language, appearance, marital background and so on), Miliband looks like he has the appeal of a sci-fi nerd.

I never really disliked Tony. Tony did a well enough job, he wasn't even close to being the worst PM this side of WW2. He made BIG mistakes, and it got him. I'll be the first to admit that I think he was a twat in a lot of cases. But then again; if the tories had won the 1997 election, does anyone REALLY think that they would've made less of a mess with Iraq, for instance?

Blair wasn't too bad. He's no Attlee. But it's unfair to remember him as an Eden as well.

Bad news about WikiLeaks. It seems that there is considerable internal turmoil. Their German "spokesman" Daniel Schmitt has reportedly left the project over disagreements with Julian Assange (source: German Spiegel Online article, no English source yet).
Well well well - a nice little tidbit in this affair: Daniel Domscheit-Berg, which is Daniel Schmitt's real name, is the husband of Anke Domscheit-Berg - and she works as "Director Government Affairs" for Microsoft Germany.

I didn't understand why Mr. Domscheit-Berg disclosed his real name after his retreat. But given his wife's employer, that disclosure harms the integrity of the WikiLeaks project, which is already in very bad shape...
Of course, he could also have pulled out to protect WikiLeaks from this conflict of interest - but then he could have said so.

Here's a Wired version of the story.

I think it's very funny how mad Assange is getting about leaked WikiLeaks information. It's a classic case of "can dish it out, but can't take it".

Not political just a news story...The owner of Segway was killed after driving his segway off a cliff!

Sounds like a decent guy and all, but damn ... the irony.

I always thought that was extremely hypocritical of him, to go on and on about transparency while being extremely shady himself. Though I can understand the need for that, to a degree. Now it sounds like his paranoia is getting to him and causing him to destroy his own organization from within. No one wants to work for a tyrant. Especially not one who's been taking heat from everyone from Reporters Without Borders to the Pentagon.

There may be more to this than meets the eye - classic playing the man not the ball? I do not think the CIA (Or a number of other interests who feel that the public can not handle the truth) think he is a nice man and they do have a track record.

Listening to the live debate of Meg Whitman vs Jerry Brown for governor of California.

Meg Whitman is being so evasive and sounding very very prepared. Fucking hope that she doesn't become governor. She's retarded and a giant liar
