Turkish journalists accuse Erdo?an of media witch-hunt

Turkish journalist Can D?ndar escapes attempted shooting outside court

D?ndar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet newspaper, and Erdem G?l, its Ankara bureau chief, could face life in prison on charges of espionage and attempting to topple the government, for publishing footage that purported to show Turkey?s state intelligence agency ferrying weapons into Syria in 2014.

Erdogan against the media

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has embarked on an offensive against Turkey?s media.

Journalists are harassed, many have been accused of ?insulting the president? and the Internet is systematically censored. The regional context ? the war in Syria and Turkey?s offensive against the PKK Kurds ? is exacerbating the pressure on the media, which are also accused of ?terrorism.? The media and civil society are nonetheless resisting Erdogan?s growing

Erdogan has been on this road for awhile now. Good to have them as a NATO ally!

Turkey heading for dictatorship?

Turkey will be lead by the beloved, kind and fault-free leader it already has. That?s not a dictatorship, Turkey simply does not need other politicians, opinions or mustaches. It?s evolved grown past these democratic experiments and it?s people will prosper and be happy until all eternity this way.

That's what really bugs me. It's a deal with the devil, a desperate try to keep the right-wing extremists here from winning too many votes. Of course, showing that you can be pressured into giving in to their demands or at least general views is not going to work towards that end.

I would think the EU would say something but, I guess it would cost them money and they don't want to do that.

There's something deep inside me telling me opening borders with Turkey is a really bad idea.

That's pretty much been the West's relationship with Turkey since the end of WW2. They invade and occupy Cyprus, we slap their hand. They massacare Kurds, we sell them the weapons to do it. Thanks to geography they're allowed to be utter dicks.

Even before that, the Armenians could tell you about the turkish people's hospitality... even though they weren't officially Turkey back then

Yup. Mostly because it should be something we as EU citizens can change for the better, but the only ones getting anything changed in any direction are the jingoists/racists/populists. Orb?n, H?cke, Kaczy?ski, Strache, Le Pen and so on - far too many suckers in these parts believe that their ideas can go together with lasting peace.

B?hmermann, among other things, called Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan ?the man who beats girls?, and said that Erdogan loved to ?fuck goats and suppress minorities, kick Kurds, hit Christians, and watch child pornography.? Much of the rest of the poem is devoted to associating Erdogan with various less accepted forms of sexuality.

"Less accepted" than fucking goats and watching child porn? Is there a good translation somewhere?

I gave them the credit of not including the Ottoman Empire (even though the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian genocides were committed by The Young Turks). Ottoman history isn't exactly pleasant when it comes to non-Turkish people.

Brb, eating lunch.
Right.

The thing that set off this ridiculous affair is mentioned in the Wikipedia article that kunedog referred to:

The poem was released two weeks after the German political satire TV show extra 3 had aired a critical song about Erdogan, which led to protests of the Turkish government.
That "critical song" was a tame and sightly childish variation on Nena's "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann"; so tame that it would never have been considered for an edgy show - which "extra 3" is not. It isn't a big show either, quite the contrary. Nevertheless, some thug in the Turkish government thought someone had insulted his mother president, which carries heavy penalties in Turkey. So they "requested" the presence of the German Ambassador in Ankara (for the umpteenth time), told him that the Great Ottoman Empire Turkish Republic will most assuredly not be insulted like this and demanded consequences for the terrible crime against the Sultan President Erdo?an. This received quite a bit of attention in Germany and there may have been some entirely accidental mocking of the Turkish reaction, what with the freedom of speech. That mocking resulted in a debate, much of it between stuck-up never-insult-the-Leader underlings and incredulous members of the public, on the merits and drawbacks of a system where people are not automatically thrown in jail for ridiculing a Leader. That debate, in turn, resulted in B?hmermann's "poem", which was a comment on the state of the freedom of speech in Germany.

I get that he was testing the law (enforcement), not saying these things are literally true. I'm still interested in a translation if anyone can link a good one (without getting in legal trouble in their country, of course).

A german high court thankfully provides the poem (in german - but not in the context of the whole show - which is nessecary to understand why this is satire, the poem by itself is just a part of it) in this press release concerning an injunction Erdogan just obtained against a german comedian:
http://justiz.hamburg.de/oberlandesgericht/6103290/pressemeldung-2016-05-17-olg-01/

You click on the blue highlighted word "Anhang" (Attachment) and find the poem is in the pdf. The injunction says that said comedian is forbidden to repeat the paragraphs marked in red.

For context: this injunction is unrelated to the charges brought against the comedian for defamation. And the injunction may also not hold up in the next higher courts.

So....

As of this day, the thread title can stand without the question mark.

By removing the immunity of 138 delegates in the parliament, the parliament practically made itself obsolete. From this day on, Turkey is no longer a democracy and is heading straight on towards a dictatorship.

It's really hard to accept that the mighty, civilized, cultured EU is completey incapable of handling the reefugee crisis and is therefore kissing Erdogan's arse.

With this arrangement in place, I wonder how Erdogan is going to continue to sell his legitimacy to his base. I think there is a chance that he turns irredentist, considering the circumstances in Syria and the Caucuses. That's not going to sit very well with Putin. I think we should be on the lookout for a clash between them for who gets to control Western Asia.
