In an interesting turn of events I got offered an opportunity to shoot along with a professional photographer(with a whopping 40k euro Hasselblad camera nonetheless) to do some car to car shots at Hockenheimring.

Since they hadnt a driver to drive the lead car, he asked Ice to do it, his first racetrack drive of this weekend.

Here are some of the shots.

Wow. Alok, you lucky lucky bastard.

And Ice for driving the van!!

Magazine worthy..

Also kudos to Ice for not crashing i guess.

Damn it, Alok. You make pimpin' look easy once again. Remember to pick me up the next time you go to the 'ring. ;)

The story behind is fairly simple. I was on the infield when I saw this guy with a Hasselblad camera. As is usual, I made smalltalk, and then some more. He asked me about my background, where I study, where I come from etc etc, and told me he'd love to see some of my sample images if I mailed him my gallery, and then gave me his card. Luckily, I had my ipod touch with me, with all my automotive photographs on it. I let him knock himself out on it while I clicked a little bit more, and then he said, he's gonna be doing a Techart shoot later on the track. I asked if I could come with him, but he said there wouldnt be any space and that he is doing it for his magazine. So I said, its not a big problem, maybe next time, shook hands and we parted.

Now, the event ends and me and Ice are at the main entrance just about to leave, when he runs across the pits and asks me if I want to go, I almost said fuck yeah. I did have a sudden loss of blood to my head, but overcome it real soon, so we both go to the pits and wait for him to bring his car and have the porsches prepared.

It turned out the lead car driver had gone to take a crap or something, dunno, but Ice got drafted in, and he did a great job. He even managed to stall a diesel :p

Holy awesomeness! Why don't they race these :D I'd watch it

Great spread Alok :)

Great shots Alok, and what a great opportunity, Bad luck Ice on stalling... ;)

God damn.

Amazing. I can only wish for an opportunity like that. Great shots, too, although the first few have too much glare... but what are ya gonna do. What camera/lens?

I was using a 12-24mm f/4 Tokina without a flare protection and a 24-120mm f/3.5-4.5 Nikkor. It was a spontaneous shoot, I didnt have any preparation. The whole thing started after 10 mins from the guy calling me in.

My dad has a diesel too, and i stall that quite a lot too. It's just so different from a petrol and i don't have enough practice with it. And it only happened once. I just didn't give it enough gas when setting off. Or it might have been setting off in 3rd, that Peugeot gearbox is mush.

Looks like you did a great job, Alok. Two minor things I would mention though, is that 1) you need to watch your framing:

That could have been my favorite of the shoot if the cars just filled more of the frame. Tighter framing would also have helped get rid of the unfortunate van-shadow.

2) Horizons! Challenging to get right at the time, easy to fix in post.

Great framing and composition, but hurt by the weird tilt and black smudge on the left. Grab the Measure tool and go nuts!

Thanks for the critic man, really appreciate it.

The framing and composition came out not so well, because I was alongside the main photographer who needed his space, i only had the gap between him through the back doors, and I had nothing to lean my camera properly against :(

I am taking this as a learning experience though, as I never have done rolling shots before.
