V8. Followed very closely by I6 and V10

Italian V6s can also sound heavenly. I also love flat fours and sixes as well! :p

Very angry V6 in a Toyota MR2. The great thing about V6s is that once you open up the exhaust, any old V6 sounds good; this one originally came out of a Toyota Camry.

4.5L V8 in an Infiniti M45. Apparently the guy's exhaust system broke, so it was basically running open headers in this clip.

After realizing that video is of a 92-98 camry v6 I'm inclined to agree.

Yet another example, the Mazda 1.8-2.5l KL series v6's (KL-de/ZE)

In general: V8's sound the best. Whether it's a small block chevy V8, a Mustang Cobra, or a smaller, higher compression engine like Ferrari's or RS4's, most V8's out there sound fantastic.

The best sounding car I've ever driven: Ferrari 360 Berlinetta with a Tubi exhaust. My neighbor invited me to drive it, then encouraged me to drive it hard for some 12 miles of backroads. At low rpm it's all burbly from the exhaust. When you're over 4000 revs though, the engine begins to drown out the pipes and all you hear is the intake and valvetrain screaming two feet behind your ear. To call it "spine-tingling" would be an understatement.

But the best sounding engine I've ever personally heard was a Carrera GT. It sounded like sex.

Except for the GM 3800....

EDIT: I cannot wait to hear what Porsche's flat 8 will sound like. As bone chilling as their flat 6 is, it should be bloody brilliant.
Porsche made a 1,5-litre flat 8 (Type 753) for F1 in 1962 to go with the 804. It was so expensive and costly for Porsche that they had to find another use for it, so it was later enlarged to twice it's original displacement and found it's way into the 908. I have an article on that engine as well, so if anybody want scans, I can post them... Anyway, some flat 8 noise:

This was actually a hard decision. I love the sound of the V8 in several cars (classic chevys, the ascari a10, the AM V8 vantage to name a couple), but the V10 sends a chill down my spine whenever I hear it. The Gallardo, the viper, and most importantly the Carrera GT for sure.

Since NOBODY voted for the i4 i suppose its worth throwing in these gems. May not be best example, but i still prefer the sound to much more modern I4s. And no, you don't have to have a high-pitch sound to make power with a i4 (look up Offenhauser), but it just so happens all the recent production engines have been designed one way and one way only.

yeah i know it probably sounds like crap to you, but trust me, its way more fun then having a i4 that sounds like a vacuum being revved over and over. Personally prefer that dirty-mangy-deep sound to any hayaninjaCBR600RR1

Both of you are completely wrong.

Best sounding I4 is the Toyota 4a-ge. (20v the best of the breed)

Some more evidence for the V6-More Mazda KL goodness

:edit: Although I do agree, the 4AGE and the Merc 190E engine both sound very good as well. Also of note is the E30 M3 motor.

But this is why I chose the Inline Six

I love the V10, V12 and Flat 6, but none of them give you the earth shattering, gutteral pounding that a V8 does.

You can watch any LeMans series race around the world and you will never miss when a V8 Vette goes by the commentator box.

The first week we had our B7 S4, I ran in to my neighbor outside who said, "damn, that thing sounds like it's going to beat you up and take your lunch money..."

Nothing gives you the unbalanced, primal, throaty roar of a V8.

damn, V8s are winning! Go V12s,V6s and the like!

What about the BRM H-16?

Im just kidding, I dont think it sounds all that great, but I just wanted to throw it out there. Nothing beats a Ferrari V12, except maybe a cammed Chevy smallblock.

Also, that H-16 is two 1.5 liter V8s stacked on top of each other. EIGHT CAMSHAFTS. The crankshafts were geared together. Very heavy engines, a failure from an engineering standpoint.

Sorry to be late AND pedantic, but that video is a load of bollocks.

They are talking about the BRM H16 engine made in 1966 for the 3.0 normally aspirated formula, but the sound is by the infinitely cooler 1940s BRM V16 which was only 1.5 litres with twin Rolls Royce centrifugal superchargers (you can clearly hear them on the video) and made 550bhp.

here's a montage that isn't bollocks...

This sound makes the hairs stand up on my arms...
