Formula 1 returns to the Hockenheimring this year after a break in 2007, as we enter the second half of the season incredibly there is a three way tie at the top of the World Drivers Championship with Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen all sitting on 48 points.
So how did we get here? Well I thought as we are hitting the second half of the season I might do a ?mid-season review.?
On March 16 it was Go, Go, Go as the 2008 season kicked off in Melbourne, Australia with Hamilton on pole. Within the first lap Fisichella, Vettel, Button, Webber and Davidson were all eliminated. Eventually Only eight drivers would finish the race, with Lewis Hamilton taking the win followed by Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg in second and third places respectively. Bourdais finished in seventh and scored two points on debut, Barrichello was disqualified after finishing sixth for ignoring a red light in the pit lane. This meant Raikkonen being the last driver to retire would score a point for eight place, even though he didn?t finish.
Round 2 in Malaysia saw Felipe Massa take pole, a position he would not hold onto during the race, retiring on lap 31 after spinning off into the gravel. Kimi Raikkonen went on to win the race ahead of Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalianen. Overall the race was rather dull.
Bahrain hosted Round 3 in which saw Robert Kubica score his first ever pole position in F1. But the Ferraris were on fire in Bahrain and they would finish one, two ahead over Robert Kubica in third. Felipe Massa scored his first win of the season with team mate Raikkonen in second. The race bought controversy as Lewis Hamilton who had a damaged front wing collided into his former teammate Alonso while trying to pass him. It was suggested that Alonso brake tested Hamilton, but this was later dismissed after the telemetry from Renault was examined.
Round 4 and the teams were back in Europe at the Spanish GP, Kimi Raikkonen was on pole with local hero Alonoso qualifying second on the grid. Alonoso?s efforts would not last as he retired on lap 25 with an engine failure. Kimi Raikkonen would go on to win the race from pole with teammate Massa finishing second and Hamilton taking the final spot on the podium. Sadly this was the final Grand Prix for Super Aguri due to financial difficulties.
It was off to Turkey for Round 5 and with a slightly altered qualifying system due to the withdrawal of Super Aguri, Felipe Massa managed to score pole position for the second time this season. From here he would go on to a race win, with Hamilton in second and Raikkonen in third. Turkey marked the 257th race start for Rubens Barrichello, hus making him the driver who has raced the most number of Formula One races, beating Riccardo Patrese's 256.
Monaco was the host of Round 6, Massa edged ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton to take pole position. In an action packed race which turned out to be the first wet race of the season, Hamilton managed to keep his wits about him and take the win, Robert Kubica guided his BMW to second with Massa in third. The race was finished two laps early due to the two hour time limit for races. Adrian Sutil had a superb drive taking his Force India from 18th on the grid to fourth position before Kimi Raikkonen collided with him at the exit of the tunnel, ending Sutil's race. The GP also marked Frank Williams? 600th race as an entrant and Fisichella?s 200th GP Start. STR debuted the STR3 at Monaco, Sebastian Vettel would was given a 5 grid penalty for a gear box change. Fisichella was also given a 5 grid penalty for a gearbox change also.
The teams headed to North America for Round 6 for the Canadian GP, Hamilton took pole during qualifying on a track which was criticised for breaking up at turn 10, overnight new tarmac and concrete was applied to the damaged surface, much to the disgust of the drivers. Robert Kubica took his first ever win and the first ever win for the BMW Sauber team, his teammate Heidlfeld finished second wraping up a perfect result for the team with David Coultard back on the podium in third. Hamilton and Rosberg would both score a 10 spot penalty for the next race after failing to stop at the pit lane red light when a safety car was on the track. Hamilton rear ended Raikkonen and Rosberg rear ended Hamilton, ending the race for all three.
It was back to Europe as France hosted Round 8 at Magny-Cours, Kimi Raikkonen took pole position and is Finnish counterpart would get a 5 grid penalty for blocking Webber in qualifying. Barrichello would also get a 5 grid penalty for a gearbox change. Hamilton and Rosberg?s grid penalties would cost them dealer, they started 13th and 19th on the grid respectively. Kimi Raikkonen would suffer from an exhaust problem on his car during the race, giving Massa the race lead and eventually win. Raikkonen managed to nurse his car home in second with Hamilton taking third.
Round 9 at Silverstone brought two big announcements, firstly this would be the second last British GP at Silverstone with Bernie Ecclestone announcing a new 10 year deal with Donington Park. Secondly, David Coultard announced he would retire from Formula 1 at seasons end, staying at Red Bull as a development driver. Competing against the rain in qualifying Heikki Kovalainen would take his first pole position in his F1 career with Mark Webber also scoring his and Red Bull?s best qualifying result starting in second. It was a wet start to the race, which set the tone for the day, Hamilton put on a superb performance on intermediate tyres on a heavily wet track to win his home GP. Nick Heidfeld came in second and Rubens Barrichello with another great drive pushed his Honda to third. David Coultard would not make it past lap 1 of his final race at his home GP, he collided with Sebastian Vettel, ending both their races.
WDC Top 8 After Round 9: =1st Hamilton, Massa and Raikkonen - 48pts, 4th Kubica ? 46pts, 5th Heidfeld ? 36pts, 6th Heikki Kovalainen - 24pts, 7th Jarno Trulli ? 20 pts, 8th Mark Webber ? 18pt.
Here are the questions.
1) Who will take Pole and who will win the Race?
2) WDC rankings for Hamilton, Massa and Raikkonen after this race?
3) Hockenheimring or Nurburgring?
4) Race results for Barrichello, Vettel and Piquet Jr?
5) Which driver/s do you think will get sacked before the end of the season?
6) What has been your highlight of the season so far?
7) Out of the remaining GPs, which are you most looking forward to and why?
The race to the world championship is well and truly alive, it?s all locked up at the top and the championship is there for Hamilton, Massa and Raikkonen?s taking. The race begins at 1pm local time on the 20th of July.
Until then, let the discussions begins!!
