All of you who speak a non-english language as your primary language and like american made/english-language hollywood films, do you prefer to watch them in their original english with native language subtitles or are you more comfortable listening to them dubbed in your native language.

I for one cannot stand watching european or asian movies dubbed in english and MUST hear the real actors voices (one it doesnt sound weird and two, i like picking up/learning foreign words/phrases) and reading subtitles in english.

What say the rest of you

the same i guess can apply to native english speakers watching foreign films/animation.

Would you rather just hear them dubbed in english or are you a purist who must hear them in their original language soundtrack?

Subbed all the way. I watch a lot of anime and subbed is the only way to go (well, other than learning Japanese and watching it raw). Most dubs can't capture the original voice actors' characteristics correctly. I also have watched some Mandarin dubbed Hollywood movies, it's just horrible.

Unfortunately German TV and cinema is pretty much all dubbed, which is also the reason I don't watch it unless there's some original German content on. German Dubs used to be very high quality with nearly perfect timing and translation, they also used to have a audio sub-channel that broadcasted the original language on some stations, but that options seems to have disappeared and the quality of the dubs is atrocious now. Worst thing is, everything gets released a with a huge delay as they have to do the dubs first.

For foreign films and shows I much prefer the original language version and in case it's a language I don't speak, subs all the way. Some shows (Best Motoring springs to mind) I even watch without understanding and lack of subs or dubs.

i can't even watch mandarin dubs of cantonese soundtrack films, sounds so fake and awful and i swear they use the same two female voices to voice ALL women in HK films.

I simply CAN'T STAND dubbed shows and movies. As other already said, you almost never match the voice acting of the original performer. Also (at least in Brazil) the overall sound quality is much lower after it is dubbed and I like to hear things in foreign languages to help me learn them.

I watch non-English language films with subs, my wife (Japanese) watches English language films with subs too.

I think only old people, children and the illiterate prefer dubbed.

Given I can get my hands on it, I watch English language movies without subtitles whatsoever (an option you forgot). I speak English, why would I stick to subtitles which contain many errors and draw my attention from the movie itself?

If the movie is in a language I don't speak, I'll have German or English subtitles. On German TV, everything is dubbed, and compared to other countires, done quite well it seems. As that's something you're used to it doesn't sound as weird as for someone who isn't used to it. Nevertheless, I prefer to hear the original sound. It just gives you more atmosphere.

I speak Farsi, but I rarely watch Iranian movies. As for foreign movies, I have no reason to watch them subbed or dubbed because I speak pretty decent English. ;)

When I was a kid growing up in Iran I used to watch a lot of dubbed stuff on TV, and I was used to it. But nowadays when I go back and I hear their dubbed movies and shows, i just laugh because it's really terrible. For one, they have about 10 voice actors dubbing stuff from all genres for 9 channels. Then there's the really, really crap translation in subtitles which just confuses someone who speaks both the spoken and the written languages.

But I refrain from watching non-English movies... dealing with a subtitle or listening to a hilarious dub just takes away from the movie experience for me.

Dubbed stuff is the worst thing ever for video. Subtitles are totally the way to go.

With that said, I don't watch too many foreign films.

Dubbed movies suck pretty hard. However, for a good laugh, it's sometimes cool to go back and watch an old dubbed Kung Fu movie, just for the pure cheesiness of it. A couple friends and I did that not long ago and it was a riot

Subtitled...Only cartoons (and some low quality porn :woot:) are dubbed. Thank god actually because i think dubbed movies/tv shows are losing alot of their charm.

subtitles FTW
dubbed movies FTL

that is all

^ Agree, i got so bored of Taxi 4 dubbed that it spoilt the whole movie for me

Dubbing makes baby Jesus cry.

It depends.

All the movies that arrive in Spain are dubbed (we even get Catalan dubbed movies) and I have to say that Spanish dubbers are amongst the best in the world so I don't mind watchin dubbed movies. But then, there are cases where I prefer to watch the original version because there are some jokes or things related to the different accents people have that simply don't work dubbed.

That! Of course, with a few exceptions. I like some comedy movies, like Shrek, for example, where the dubbing makes it much more reachble with local jokes, etc put in a smart way. When that's the case, I just watch the 2 versions. Cartoons tend to rely a lot on the dubbing process too. I really really enjoyed how the 90's Batman Animated ended up with the Brazilian voices.
