It could also be that he was just grabbing whatever he saw and stuff that fit in his pocket with the idea of getting out of there asap, that's why he didn't search and left your laptop there.

May be you can get one of those networked camera and point it to the door, set it up to upload to a web server or email you (just set up a new gmail account) whenever it detects motion. You can just leave it record and when something happens, you can go check out who went to your room.
 
Lock the fucking doors, or find a roommate that locks the doors.

Even if I go down the hall here in my complex to get the mail, I make sure the deadbolt is set on both doors before I leave..

And to recover your stuff, just waterboard your roommate until he squeals.
 
^ Since the AVATAR change it is nice to see the new softer Quicky giving such sound advice. But I agree with him - room mate now is officially a toad.
