The "New Toys" Thread

Most data is overrated. A music collection can be worth the time and money, but series and movies? Who ever watches 900 gig of series and movies again? Once they are a couple of years old they are dirt cheap to buy legally anyway...

My old shitty JVC Hi-Fi died yesterday so I decided to get a decent amp/AV selector system to replace some of my older equipment.
Picked up this Sony STR-DG910 system dirt cheap and some Yamaha 5.1 speakers to go with it (I only have a small room so didn't need bigger speakers).

The cable clutter at the rear. I need to get a few leads still.

It didn't take me a year to get I wanted the first gen but decided to wait for 3G. It only came out on Pay & Go a few weeks ago in the UK ;-)

Peter3hg,
What's your impression with the Sony AVR? Likes, dislikes?

First impressions are good. The sound quality seems brilliant to me, but obviously this is highly subjective and dependant on speakers. I like the flexibility of being able to have numerous inputs of various types, and still just having a single HDMI output. The uprating of analogue signals also seems to be fairly impressive. The system is pretty easy to set up and has loads of useful features such as being able to rename inputs.
I have just a few niggles at the moment. Firstly the player will only go up to 1080i with Component, it just won't accept 1080p. Secondly, the OSD on a TV is a bit crap but you don't really need it anyway as you can easily do everything of the front screen. The final niggle is that the remote could be slightly better. There are a few functions that I would like to be able to do with the remote, but you have to use the buttons on the unit itself, or mess around in all the menus.

I'd google on that 1080i over component thing, seems like a lot of players/televisions/cables are limited to that.

Tadaaa! I now have a lava lamp.

The bottom is kinda hot, I wonder if I should put a plank of wood under it, just in case...
