I guessed with "the heart" and put it as Bern just to get an idea how far they are going and mapquest says it's;

"Total Est. Time: 14 hours, 37 minutes Total Est. Distance: 876.97 miles "

So 900 miles on 1 tank, that's going to be pretty impressive.

RANT:

I truly love it when they go to Switzerland. I can't think of a country in mainland Europe that is equally gorgeous. Espescially the bit between Neuch?tel and Lucerne is a paradise.
You should really see those roads.

That's Lotus country, I tell you.

In the light of this revelation the whole endeavour seems quite pointless. Why leave that country? Hire something small and try not to crash into a mountain on one side while not falling down a million miles on the other side at maddening speeds.

"I tell you what. Let's hire an ecomobile and drive boringly northwards. That should look good on telly."

They should go putzing around the Rigi.

its 884 km from BERN to Blackpool, 30 of which are taken up by the english channel, where they dont use fuel, so about 850 is just 50 miles more than Jezzer did on his audi A8 trip, so if they use something with a smaller engine than the 4.2 liter audi, and similar sized gas tank, ( thats why they wont use a VW polo, which would do like a million miles to the gallon, but can only hold 40 ml of petrol) The A8, or atleast the S8 has a 90 liter tank (20 gallons), i recon they would use something like a renault laguna (61.4 mpg out of town and 14.5 gallon tank which gives 890 mile range) or a bmw 3 series (13.2 gallon with 68.9 mpg out of town - 909 miles range) say richard and may would use those two, and jeremy would take a ferrari and not make it there, after all one of the will be missing at the end.

You are all talking about diesel cars. Something tells me they will be using petrol ones.
The only car that comes slightly close to the target is an old Audi 90 with a 1.6 or 1.8 (they get around 40mpg on the highway) and it has a 80 (or 90) litre tank.

Dear god, do you guys actually drive that slowly on the freeway/motorway?

We in yankland dont even drive that slowly in school zones! In miami freeway speeds are from 85 to 100, that looks like 10.

James was filmed on the M25 (aka the London Orbital Motorway). There are sections that they would have travelled on that are notorious for jams and slow moving traffic which is why they would have been going at those speeds. Unless there is a jam or you are in an oversized vehicle that has a police escort there is a minimum speed limit of 40mph on UK motorways.

I can't think of any old car that can cover 900 miles on a single tank of gas.

The car has to be economical, and yet have a big fuel tank. This rules out any small European car (my Polo can only take 45 litres)

JC did 800 miles on one tank with a Audi A8 4.0 TDI on a Top Gear challenge once. (as mentioned)

I curious to what car they will be using!

An VW Passat/Golf bluemotion could be a good contender.....

i've been on the miami speedway, the drive like 50 mp/h over there.... It was really relaxing to drive over there, i must say...

Jeremy appears from the youtube clips to be using a Jaguar XF diseasel, and Hammond a Polo Bluemotion with James in the new diesel Subaru Legacy.

I guess I was wrong about thediesel thing. I'm wondering if it's even possible in a petrol-powered car...

I think Jeremy was driving a Jag XJ diesel instead of a XF diesel, take a closer look to the rear light there.

Anyway the cars look all quite fitting for each of them, Jezza in a big luxurious Jag, Richard in a Bluemotion Polo to match his size, and Captain "not so slow" James in a Suby Liberty Outback(which he tested a couple of years ago and loved it) with a new type Boxer diesel.

It all sounds great, but a whole episode challenge? This hasn't been done since the africa trip and somehow driving cross africa (or the U.S., or to the north pole) seems more whole-episode-worthy than fuel economy.... but we'll see...

Looking at the preview I wonder if the pink bike will be used in this or if that's from a later episode (Vietnam?)

Maybe the ship is like the truffle, something they have to carry with them that also makes using smaller things like a vespa much harder than getting a car?

hmmm... what looks gayer... the bike, the helmet, or the jacket.

Not to mention they'll just be driving across Northern France again like Clarkson has already done for many races (yawn).

According to bbc.co.uk/topgear, we'll also get to see James in the Zonda F Roadster vs. Stiggie in the Veyron on the Track and Harry Enfield as SIARPC

Blackpool or bust

In the next episode of the brand new turbo-charged, high-octane and entirely-factual series of Top Gear, the presenters head off on a caring and sharing long-distance economy run, which naturally descends into an all-out trans-continental race.

Walking in the footsteps of such national treasures as Ken Dodd, Danny La Rue and Status Quo, the Top Gear presenters have been invited to turn on this year's Blackpool Illuminations. Naturally, this presented us with an idea for a challenge:

Is it possible to drive from Basel in Switzerland to Blackpool on a single tank of fuel and still make it in time to throw a big switch in front of thousands of people? Find out on Sunday.

Also, James puts another massive dent in his reputation for Christian motoring when he drives the new Pagani Zonda F Roadster, while after literally years of nagging, we've finally managed to get a Bugatti Veyron out on the test track for the Stig to play with.

And, as if this wasn't enough, our first ever guest makes a return as Harry Enfield arrives to drive our reasonably priced car.
