the 5 speed gearboxes had that reputation (the only option of the GC chassis WRX and Sti models) but the 6 speed found in the Sti and top spec Legacy was the first new gearbox design by subaru in almost 15 years and pretty solid.
 
Went to dealer today, all as going well as suspected. The mechanic working on my car said he is replacing 3rd and 4th gear synchro, but from looking at my transmission he has no clue why it has caused any problems.

All I can say is, man that sucker is huge. This thing dwarfs the T-5 out of my Mustang. Three piece housing! I mean these gears are just pure beef, 1st and 2nd gear are monsters!

Synchro looks fine, I am sure there is something around there that is causing it to not function, since I haven't taken gears off of shafts before. Everything looks to be in order, Subaru of course suspected 3rd gear to be bald, and it is in perfect condition :mrgreen:

So I'm guessing it is going to be next week until I get it back, being that they ordered the part yesterday. Hopefully it comes back all well, the mechanic working on it has been there for a good while now and is a pretty good guy, always showing me the other blunders of owners, such as the EJ257 with a hole in the side of the block :mrgreen:
 
EJ257 by design isn't the strongest block in the world, by the simple fact that its not one solid engine block but two halves that come together around a central crankshaft. Plus the new engines are semi open decks which means they aren't solid metal either with lots of hollowed out spaces for better coolant flow.

Older EJ20 turbo engines in the older JDM Sti's were closed deck blocks which had inferior coolant flow, more heavier because of more solid metal, but more durable at the same time.

Ppl seem to think the EJ series turbo engines can handle monster power levels like the solid iron 4G63 Mitsu and Nissan SR20, RBDETT engines, but frankly they can't without serious rebuilding.

You know when I saw the pics of the new WRX/STI I hated it. However I finally got to see one in person the other day and they look pretty sharp. Congrats ont he car.

I know this thread is old but I love Subies. There just isn't a dealer with in 70 miles of me so I don't think it's wise to get one.

I felt the same way at first. But look at it this way, I traded my '06 STI in for it, which to some is controversial. I couldn't be happier with it, even with the issues I have had.

Nah, I'll live with the light being on. From what I have read on IWSTI, NASIOC, ScoobyMods..if I put another set of TPMS on them, I have to pay the dealer to reset the system to "sync" to the new sensors every time.

They are 225/50/17, speedo isn't off by almost anything. It was so freaky when I first started driving, because I couldn't hear any tire noise:D. It was like I was wearing ear plugs or something. Also, no rub! :D

Sucks that we had 55f weather yesterday that melted all the snow away. But I'll be covering the snow storm coming in tomorrow for my station, give me enough time to let my car sit around as the snow gathers over the next couple days:mrgreen:
