General Motors plans to auction more than fifty cars from its heritage museum as part of its ongoing effort to raise funds.

The list of cars for sale is not yet complete and the rarest models in the collection will not be sold.

But more modern additions - from the 1980s and 1990s ? make up the bulk of cars going to auction.

This includes the entire Hummer and GMC collection and a series of rare and limited edition Corvettes. A 1904 Oldsmobile Touring, two Peugeot 205 Turbos, Bill Clinton?s presidential Limo and a car used by the Pope in 1998 are also on the list.

The GM heritage museum plans to hive off vehicles it can buy back relatively easily if times get better.

All the cars are being auctioned by Barret-Jackson from 13-19 January in Scotsdale, Arizona.

Sad. :(

Good. I don't want my car company dwelling in the past.

I wouldn't call it dwelling in the past, I'd call it preserving history.

That's for collectors.

Okay, the way I see it they're saying "look at all the cool cars we made! Aren't we swell" and then they just make crappy cars in the present. That's pretty dwelling, don't you think?

So I supose you think that the Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and Lambo museum collections are all pointless too.

actually i remember that gm keeps some of the cars for inspiration for future models. Like of cadilliac, they had the old cars with the fins as a good example to get ideas from. while at the Same time the also had a cimmeron (the chevY cavilier) parked next to it to show the designers what a mistake it was and what not to make.

I've seen some of the cars in that collection like the Corvette Mako Shark and the various Astros (not the van). It's a shame that they are all getting sold.

You honestly consder GMs classics to be on the same level with them? While your point is valid, you're holding comic book art at the same value with art works from the Renaissance era. Sorry but I don't buyyour comparison

Same basic idea, doesn't matter if its Ferrari or if its Chrysler.

They have museums to showcase some of their more impressive works (like Concept Cars, which GM has made boatloads of). As well as one example of their successful cars. (successful does not equal good FYI).

Like May said, you only need one Morris Marina, as a Warning to history...

I would say that a good amount of those cars are worth CONSIDERABLY more than most Ferrari's.

At least they are doing something to try and get money instead of sitting on their thumbs waiting for their bailout.

And it's not like they are being bought to get thrown in a landfill.

That's far too insulting to GM's long legacy. Their 50s and 60s concepts were breathtaking, ahead of their time, and awe-inspiring; their cars of the time captured the essence of their age, reflecting a more successful time when they managed 1/3 of America's market share and everybody knew them by heart.

They were building nuclear-powered, bubble-topped fighter jets on wheels when the Germans were still struggling to rebuild after WWII, so I would consider their concepts to be far more imaginative and impressive, and even more worthy of preservation.

I wonder if there are any turbine cars going up for sale, I know Chrysler did some of those. Now those would be neat to have.

?All three of those 50's Firebird concepts in the above picture are gas turbine. Not sure they would auction those off though... there was also this weird '51 Buick concept that was turbine powered.

I know, it slipped my mind - as far as I know GM never ventured into the world of atom-splitting unlike Ford with its astonishing Nucleon concept.

When I was in Ann Arbor at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum I got to check out the Chrysler Turbine Car, which is a hopelessly pretty little car, and along with the above Nucleon is reminiscent of the sort of innovation that the American automakers were capable of at the height of their successes.

I hope for sure they won't auction off those amazing Firebirds as well, or give them to Jay Leno at the very least.

Those firebirds were among my favorite cars when I was a kid. I saw them and my child-ness instantly said.. I must have one!

The Chevy Astro and Corvette concepts are pretty awesome, easily some of the coolest cars I've ever seen.
