:blink: Why of why BMW.

It's been several years in the making, but BMW's plan to expand their inroads further into the "lifestyle" market appears ready to finally bear fruit. Looking something like a ground-bound X6 that's missed a few collagen injections, the 5 Series Gran Turismo concept will likely be one of the last Bimmers that Chris Bangle has had a significant hand in designing (for better or worse).

In any case, these first shots of the 5 Series GT have slipped out in advance of the car's planned Geneva Motor Show unveiling, and it looks like it was caught at some sort of an unveiling for what looks to be a select group of invited media (notice the camera and video rigs in plain sight).

We'll leave the judgments up to you and the gimmicky segmentation jargon to BMW ("Progressive Activity Sedan"... really?), but this double-jointed slant-back definitely looks production-ready, with its evolutionary front end (grille borrowed from the 2010 7-Series, headlamps from the Concept CS, rump from the X6, etc.), We would expect the interior textures and colors to be toned down a bit for production, and perhaps the wheels will get an inch smaller or so, but other than that, we expect this on dealer forecourts without necessitating any major changes.

What the hell? It's like a 5 Series that's been punched up. What was so wrong with the 5 Series Touring?

I'll stick with the best 5er thanks, the e34.

EDIT: Atleast the center console is angled towards the driver.

Hmmm...I guess they have a different definition of Gran Turismo in Germany.

I'm also thinking that BMW have spies on our forums. They saw how many threads we have for awesome station wagons, and how much we like them, and so they decided to make their new GT car look like a station wagon...

There is no other word for this - it's horrible!

Uh... no. It also makes us cringe.

Sad thing is, though, that people will still buy those cars, even if you'd ostentatiously puke on them in front of the owner.

I have a cousin who has an X3 as a company car. I asked him: "So when did you lose your eyesight?" and after he didn't understand what I meant, I explained it to him and asked why he chose that ugly thing - after all he had a choice. But he couldn't even give me a real reason why he bought it. People buy those things just because it is a BMW and because it's a fashion - no other reason.

It really is a fact and not just a clich?. It's almost like BMW deliberately makes their cars ugly just to prove that they are being bought anyway, because BMW customers are mostly stupid braggers.

I used to think that BMW drivers are blokes who actually care about what car they are driving, but since the introduction of the new 7er in 2001 I came to the conclusion, that they are just lemmings who willingly follow the blue-white badge anywhere it goes. My cousin (who otherwise is a really nice guy) is the living proof.

Honestly, if I had an Aston Martin or a Jaguar XK, I would feel the need to wash it after having parked next to such a minger like that 5er "GT" concept.

I won't jump on the oh so popular "I hate new BMW cars me"-bandwagon and say the following:

I quite like it. It's more of a 4-door coupe than any CLS or Passat CC.
