The Gun thread

Oh, you didn't say anything about order... :p

Snark aside, I understand the significance. Also, I googled it... so if I didn't really know, I do now.

Yeah, I (and others) differ from the NRA order because I (we) believe that the priority and order of operations should be different; also because you can teach #1 to little kids first, then as they grow up to be responsible enough to be trusted with a pistol at the range you can teach them #2 and #3.

In fact, I believe that #1 should be taught to all people, whether they want to operate a firearm or not. And that if they find a gun, they should treat it as loaded; if they don't know how to clear it, call over someone who does.

Did anyone else watch the 20/20 "If I only had a gun" thing? If not, you can watch it online at abcnews.com

Did anyone else think it was catastrophically flawed and slanted? That simulated school rampage was pure idiocy. Yeah, a professionally trained and maintained police officer versus a student who'd never done any live fire exercises before and taken completely by surprise. Obviously the student is going to WTF pwn the officer every single time. And then when we do get people who have shot before, we'll throw in another gunman, just to fuck with accurate results!

And then when we do the "teenagers find a gun in a drawer" scenario, we'll find the dumbest stoners in the county that will just point the gun right at their own faces like dumbshits.

And they kept repeating the same "Columbine, Virginia tech" mantra that is somehow supposed to convince us that owning a gun does nothing. What about all the mass shootings that were stopped by citizens with guns? Anyone remember the crazed Marine sniper (I think it was)? Counter-sniped by an NRA member, I believe.

But I think the piece de resistance was Diane Sawyer doing the simulated patrol reaction thing. They had two police officers standing right behind her and they didn't think to film THEM doing the simulation? And what the hell was with the police officer pointing the simunition glock right at her face? I mean, he shouldn't have done that period, and to add insult to injury, he didn't even check if it was loaded. If they wanted to do that little bit they should have just grabbed a blue or red training gun. I mean, they're talking about gun safety, and then they pull a stunt like that on camera AND air it?

I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?!

The lefty media is watching the news that the only things Americans are buying now is guns and ammunition (there is currently a shortage of both despite manufacturers hiring extra shifts and throwing the plants into overdrive), both in massive quantities, and they are getting desperate to ram their disarmament agenda through - so you get pieces like this. (More on this should probably be relegated to the 20/20 piece's thread up in Political, though.)

Anyway, the only American "consumer goods" sector that's not having problems is the firearms industry. Everyone is buying guns, ammo, magazines, accessories. They're flying off the shelves, the companies are posting record profits, and lots of gun makers have the help wanted signs out. Before someone says that this is due to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, it's not, this is pure civilian demand that's gone through the roof.

The media looks at this after expecting to be able to get their newly-elected pals in government to quickly pass more gun control and they freak out. Expect more hit pieces shortly.

I'm going to fire a (real) gun for the first time today. My roommate offered to take me to the shooting range.

So were you in fact killed by the evil guns, Dogbert? :D

I was not! In fact, I managed to impress my roommate (who, I should mention, just got back from a tour in Iraq jumping out of perfectly good planes with the 82nd Airborne) with my P22 shooting.

His 1911, however, is a monster... though it's very, very nice. I also dislike his security-company issue revolver.

The revolver dislike is not unusual. Felt recoil is higher on a revolver than on an automatic, for starters, and they tend to be more fatiguing to shoot because of the balance and weight alone.

As for the rest, it's just a matter of practice, practice, practice. :D The 1911 isn't the easiest pistol in the world to master, either.

It's also worth noting that my roommate said this was the nicest range he'd ever seen. It had a massive (clean) storefront with more guns than I've ever seen in one place, what seemed like a very long range, and very professional employees. I was quite pleased.

My main dislike about the revolver was that it had an unnerving hair trigger when cocked, and a very heavy trigger when not. I understand there's going to be a difference, but it was far too much for my tastes.

Also, .45 ammo is expensive, so practice? is out of the question. Especially when we can get >1000rds of .22 ammo with my wage so far tonight.

There are a couple bolt-action rifles the range is selling for ~$250, and they seem very nice. I might rent one of the range bolt-action rifles and see how I like it next time we go. EDIT: We're also thinking about going halfsies on a laser sight for the P22, which he said goes for about $100.

There are kits that allow the 1911 to fire .22 so you can get in lots of practice for cheap.

Also, Walmart has the cheapest .45 ammo, $35/100.

And yeah, the .22's can use cheap, light duty accessories. Basically, it can use the lasers, lights, and sights off toys like Airsofts and such because there's little recoil. Not so much on the .45. :D

Ooh, I'll relay that to him. However, for $35 I can get 5x as much .22 ammo, so .45 is looking to just be for special occasions. :p

If we get toys for the 1911, they're going to be very nice. I'll actually get some pictures of it today, since I know you guys like gun porn.

Oh I forgot to tell you guys, I won my first medal :D a gold one, it was a group tournament, 3 people, 4 times shooting, after the third time we were in second place but we were really good the last time and those in first place were crap, so we won :D

Nice!

Dogbert, was caliber revolver were you firing? I've fired my friends medium frame .44 magnum revolver before...that was a freaking beast.

Anybody know what the energy comparison between .44 Mag and .50 action express? I have a feeling they are similar.

Congratulations!

Women should be encouraged to take up marksmanship as a hobby, IMHO. As you can testify, it's fun and women do well at it. (In fact, women have a better grasp of the spatial mechanics that are critical to marksmanship than men do, on average.)

As you know, it depends on how the cartridge is loaded, but the rule of thumb for a .44 Mag is about 1000 ft/lbs at the muzzle and .50AE is about 1400ft/lbs (also at the muzzle).

My girlfriend is a natural shooter, and that annoys the hell out of the guys when we go to Field Target meetings.
Congrats, mgkdk!

Ouch, that's going to hurt for the G-36 project team....

I never liked the G3's roller action much. The PSG-1 was a great and precise development of it, but it never really worked out the way they thought it would, as far as I can tell.

Eh, got the basics there. They're out of order, though. Hang on a sec and I'll go recycle the one I wrote up for one of the older gun threads.

Edit: Okay, here you go:

You forgot rule #4. Know your target and what is behind it.

This thread goes to show why I need to wander into off topic more often, but I'm on TFR anyways so...meh. Kinda late for me at the moment but I'll join your party with pretty pretty pictures of my Marlin Model 60, RPK-47, and FAL L1A1 sometime tomorrow.

Bad news, the 10/22 is going to be on the ban lists because of all the neat stuff that can be done to the rifle.. :p

My favorite so far is the 10/22 Gatling Gun(s), followed by the Muzzelite bullpup conversion, then the Krinker Plinker. :D

You forgot rule #4. Know your target and what is behind it.

That's part of #3, IMHO - "never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to destroy" includes "knowing what the hell you're pointing your firearm at".
