Stereotypical car forum quotes

Even in Forced Induction circles, there's no replacement for displacement.

So, so true. Nothing in the automotive world can beat an increase in displacement for easy *and astronomical* power. And the sound... *orgasmic sigh* Nothing can beat a large-displacement (straight-pipe) V8 in the sound department...

Saleen S7-R with 7.0 V8 (about 620 hp *~89 hp/L*, with ACO-mandated intake restrictors)

...except maybe a similar-displacement V12... :p

You and I will be getting along just fine  That seems to be one piece of information that goes over the "OMG HP/liter". Never do they consider that if a 7+ liter engine makes 100+hp/liter it's making 700+hp.

The bigger the displacement the greater the weight of the internals, which means big engines will never rev like a small engine will unless you go exotic materials. That the 5.0L V10 in the big M cars revs to 8250RPM with a full OEM warranty is an amazing feat, but the price tag reflects it.

However, what the OMG HP/L crowd (who are inevitably Internet warriors or bench racers who buy more Clearasil than petrol) don't realise is that a car that makes great power at astronomical RPM are inevitably gutless at the point where you drive it every day.

If you're building a track car, a 12,000RPM redline in a small displacement engine is fine since the chassis has no weight in it and you're always driving it above 8000.

However, when you're around town lugging air conditioning, sound deadening, a stereo, rear seats, etc, torque wins.

That said, if you talk to any driver they always want more displacement. The mighty GT-R inevitably gets upgraded from 2.6L to 2.8L (like the Z-Tune and a lot of the big Japanese tuning houses), and quite a few guys will even use a 3.0L bottom end. The SR20 in the "dori Jay Dee Em tyte" 240SX conversions inevitably get stroked out to 2.2L if the owner can afford it.

And my mechanic races EK Civics in a state circuit racing championship. Although they did win the championship with the 1.6L (and its a sub 2.0L class), they are going to a B20 conversion to be even more competitive.

Part of the reason that motor is a v10 rather than bumping up the revs on the old v8 was to reduce reciprocating mass. Of course you then start to run into problems of torsional rigidity of the crank (and block) the more cylinders you add on. Thats why the first m3 had a 4 cylinder, BMW didn't feel the 6 cylinder cranks would finish races.

Yup. I get reminded of that every time I get stuck in traffic and I can let it idle in 1st gear down the road.

Before the Cosworth DFV, the American oval tracks (specifically the Indy 500) was dominated by a big displacement 4 cylinder (offenhauser/offy). It was always preferred due to the higher torque it could put out compared to the high revving v8's offered up by the big 3. The OMG GT-R crowd seems to forget that torque is important when trying to pull yourself out of a corner.

My apologies if people didn't want this thread back to life, but I figured it's been long enough that some of you ladies and gents may have some new material.

Some typical topics I see on my frequented forums:

Hi, I have a bottle of chocolate milk and two crayons. Can I trade them for Saturn, Saab and Hummer? KBB says only one crayon and a piece of lint, so you're getting a great deal!

Love the HP/Liter comparisons. My car makes more than 100 HP/Liter but let me tell you how many cars can beat it.... ALOT :'( I like HP/ton comparisons better they show more but the reality is that you can never tell what is faster on paper unless we are talking Veyron and everything else ;P

^Quoting HP/L figures by themselves is as useless as car manufacturers quoting only the Cd figure in the brochure with no other clarification info attached.

Brabus Forums:
--Car for sale, need to pay speeding ticket

That will be me one day. Maybe.

Toyota Camry Forum

I seriously doubt that the ride of a Lotus is stiffer than in my friend's crx... and I've gotten pretty used to it so it doesn't bother me at all anymore

That said, Maxima forum:
