If your Beetle's an auto and you really want to keep it, transmission swaps are not unheard of. And one of the best things about the New Beetle was the five-speed manual, from what I've heard.
FUN FACT: I learned how to drive a manual transmission in a New Beetle Turbo.

91 Nissan 240SX
98 Saturn SL2
01 Oldsmobile Silhouette
02 VW Turbo Beetle
04 VW Jetta
05 Dodge Viper SRT10
05 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6
05 Dodge Magnum SRT8
05 Chrysler 300C SRT8
05 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (which my father owns :D)
05 Dodge Caliber SRT8
06 Cadillac Escalade ESV
07 Scion tC

2009 BMW 525d (automatic) - great fun to drive
200? Peugeot 307 SW (manual) - dull, dull, dull
2007 Mini One (manual) - loads of fun to drive, it's like a go-kart for the road
200? BMW FB02 (sequential manual w/ clutch) - the Formula BMW car, best experience I've ever had

Okay, seems like everyone's just listing all the cars they've driven, so I'll bite anyway.

(Roughly) In chronological order of when I drove it.

1984 Mazda 323 (Auto) - Mum's car. Drove it round and round our circular driveway when I was about 14.
1986 Volvo 740 GLE (Auto) - Dad's car, first time on a road - a quiet country backroad around the same time as above. I could hardly reach the pedals (me = short ass. I'm not much taller now than I was then.)
1998 Peugeot 306 XT (Auto) Mum's current car. Learner mobile for me. Still drive it occasionally.
1996 Saab 900 V6 (Auto) Some learner experience on it. Then it was clobbered by a drunk in a ute while parked in a side-street one evening. RIP.
1994 Saab 9000 CD Sedan (Auto) Dad's current car. Another learner-mobile for me. Still drive it occasionally.
1992 Hyundai Excel (Man.) - Dad's partner's car. First manual driving experience. It was in pretty bad shape by he time I got my hands on it. Helped kill it by taking it a 70 kmh on a very rough gravel road. Muffler assembly pretty much came away. Me =, dad = :censored:
Early 00's 5dr Hyundai Accent (Auto) - First ever driving lessons back in 2003 (I started quite late and was on my Leaner's Permit for ages, still on Probationary now as a result).
2005-ish Hyundai Elantra Hatch (Man.) - Manual driving lessons, passed my driving test in it in 2007.
late 80's Mazda 626 AWD Sedan (Auto) - My cousins' car. Fun to throw around corners.
1998 Holden VT Commodore Acclaim (Auto) - Friend's car and the only RWD car I've ever driven! :?
2005 Hyundai Elantra Sedan (Auto) - Friend's car. These are heaps better in manual.
1997 Daewoo Lanos SE 3dr Hatch (Man.) - Friend's car. Ugh ugh ugh..worst clutch EVER. I swear it's either out or it's in. My Jazz's clutch is heaven by comparison. Oh, and the stupid car is sparkly bright purple ewww etc.
No-idea of year Toyota Camry V6 (Auto) Hire car, that I wasn't supposed to be even driving, took it along at 120kph on a deserted hwy at night somewhere in outback WA during a family holiday. Fastest I've ever driven, too. Not that fast really. :|
2007 Honda Jazz GLi (Man.) Dad's partner's car that replaced the Excel. Knowing what these things are like made me want my Jazz when I found it for sale even more.
2005 Honda Jazz VTi-S (Man.) My first car! Unlike the GLi can get up a hill for four adult passengers on board without struggling too much. VTEC yo! etc.

That took a while to type out. Nothing much interesting in there either.

911. On a racetrack. Scariest thing ever (even more scary than go-karts).

VW Jetta. (Sister has one. Great engine, rubbish chassis).

Toyota Camry (Mum has one :p)

BMW M5 (E39. Extremely brief but it was enough for me to fall in love with it).

Mazda RX8 (Uncle's friend works in motoring press in Hong Kong)

350Z (Test drive when sister was considering one before she came over all sensible)

Honda Jazz 1.5 (My old car until it got written off in a bad crash. Brilliant city car aside from the horrible CVT transmission).

Daihatsu Charade (Sister's first car. No power steering FTW).

VW Golf (Great little car, if slightly boring).

Well I've got a tiptronic, which means It's not all that bad. I can still shift it and it's nice to not have to for those early mornings when I am really too tired to drive. But I'm sure the transmission will eventually die, and I'll probably do a swap then.

2007 Opel Corsa

...just to underline the fact that I've never driven a particularly funny car. Most of them drive very well, but few people would call them funny - except perhaps the Mini Cooper, but I didn't like it anyway.

That's quite a list, would love to try any of those cars. Which one left the biggest impression?

the Ferrari, hands down. Epic to drive in every way. My neighbor was encouraging me to wring it out too..on 15 miles of backroads.

After that my favorites were the M3, SL63 AMG and RS4 in that order.

I was a valet at Spago in Palo Alto, CA for a week and a half (including two weekends) so my list is unfairly longer than most, and probably includes more Astons, Bentlys, and Maserati's than most.

However...discounting that (since most were under 1/4 mile in a 25mph zone)...

Cars I've owned, in chronological order:
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 4-cyl, auto.
1997 Ford Ranger Flareside 4cvl, 5-speed manual (I could take Chevy Z71's off the line with that tightly wound drivetrain...but once we hit 30 or so, it was all over. :p) (I miss this truck...)
1997 Jeep Wrangler 4cyl, 5-speed manual
1996 Ford Explorer 2-door 4.0 with 5-speed (I miss this truck SOOOOO much more)
2002 Dodge Stratus (long story...and the bane of my existence)
2001 Mercury Cougar V6 (auto...shattap)

Other cars I've driven:
Old-ass Dodge Ram
1935 chevy...coupe of some sort.
1992 Ford Explorer Sport
1988 Ford F-150 I6 with 5-speed manual
1995 Explorer Eddie Bauer
1992 Buick Park Avenue
2002 Chevy Malibu
2008 Dodge Grand Caravan
2008 Dodge Caravan
1996 Honda Civic coupe...DX? LX? don't care.
2000-ish Dodge Neon sedan 4cyl auto
1999 Chevy Blazer 2-door
2004 Mini Cooper S
200X Saturn coupe...with the 1/2 door...
2003 Cadillac CTS
1996 Chevy Cavalier Coupe
2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV
2006 Mustang (rental...v6, auto)
2008 Mustang Convertible (rental...v6 auto)
2007 Mustang GT-H
2010 Mustang
2010 Camaro
1999 M3
2000 Mercedes SL73
2005 Mercedes SL55
Countless Econoline/E-series
Countless Chevy & GMC utility vans

And...Cessna 150...but it was for a class in high school, and it was only taking off and about 30 minutes of flight...no landing.

My photographer friend got to drive a Challenger...2 years ago...a GT3 RS, a CLK Black, and got to steer a Spyker Zagato...while it was being pushed. :)

edit: He just sent me a text...whlie driving a DBS from shoot location to shoot location. Fucker.

Nah, the 5spds have synchro problems. Does not like quick shifts to 2nd or 3rd. The 6spd seems to be stronger.

Anyway...
Cars I've owned

00 Ford Ranger
80 Ford Mustang
84 Mercedes Benz 500SEC
83 Saab 900
05 VW GTI 1.8t

I'll just list the one few people have listed.

1971 Ford Econoline E350. Big Engine with "three on the tree" manual. Drum Brakes all around, too. It's was owned by a friend of my Dad, who let me borrow it to run errands. It was a big, boxy cargo van. It rode very nicely, for what it was. Steering was manual, but worked well, manual brakes did nicely... Couldn't complain about much.

Mostly just my own or parents' cars, unfortunately:

1999 Chevy Tahoe, lifted with big tires (learned to drive in it)
200x Chevy Impalas and Malibus in driver's ed
2004 Nissan Quest, quite nice to drive for a minivan
2006 Lincoln Zephyr, very meh
2006 Hummer H2, great fun
1988 Chevy Blazer, also with a lift and big tires. It's a plow truck but we also use it as a backup. Such a riot to drive, it's actually physically demanding to push the gas pedal.
1975 Pontiac Grandville. 2-door convertible that is longer and wider than a Chevy Express van. This was SO close to being my first car
2001 Suzuki Vitara
2001 Hyundai Accent
1988 Chevy Corsica (just in the driveway, when I was 15)
Some old rustbucket Chrysler LeBaron and Chevy Trailblazer when i was looking to buy my first car
1996 Chrysler Sebring, of course. Current and first car.

Like anyone gives a shit; Lotus Esprit, '69 Mustang, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Corvettes, Cobalt, MKS, Jetta, GTI, Mazda 3,5,6, XJ220, Crown Vic, Explorer, F150, Ranger, Fusion, Focus, F350, Navigator, Grand Prix, 8000, Montana, GTO, G6, various boats (v8 powered boats that go in the ocean.. not buicks), a couple bmws, a couple mercedes, and the uss independence. (i'm kidding about the aircraft carrier).
