When I was 17, I had the chance to buy a 1973 Dodge Challenger R/T 340 for about $1500. Unfortunately, I let my parents talk me out of it, and ended up buying a 1975 Ford Granada coupe. Terrible, terrible, car. Unlike the European Granada/Cortina, which was a decent car, if a bit dull, the American Granada was rubbish. The big selling point in the ads was that it looked like a Mercedes - no, not really.
Then, when I was about 23, I had a chance to buy a 1968 Dodge Charger with a 383 cubic inch (6.3 litre) V8 for about $1800. It needed some work, but everything was there, with the exception of one front wing that needed replacing. Again, I let myself be talked out of it.
My point is this - you will regret not buying your dream car more than you would ever regret actually buying it.
Although I prefer the Mk 1 Escorts myself, I have seen some Mk 2s in action and they are great cars. Good luck.
