Another YouTube video that shows what a great community event this was. Note how the dads are as excited as the kids. :p

LOL! I wasn't there and I still got excited watching that bit. :D

The person who put the info up is mistaken. It says the series also deals with lego etc. so it's obviously for Toy Stories.

The foundation of the house. James has definitely picked himself a nice location.

According to the website of the Dorking Vineyard were the house is being build:
The build has commenced, James May laid the inaugural brick yesterday afternoon and rapid progress is being made. If you want to come and take a look , the site is signposted and the area is visible from the A24 as you drive past Denbies. At the moment, we are unsure as to how long the house will remain on site but we will endeavour to keep you posted!

Wonder if the house is going to lead to tailbacks on the A24? :|

Oooh, nice pics. I'll have a proper look through this thread when I've got time. I've been stuck in the build room all week, and barely seen the site, though I got to have a quick look round it last night. Has anyone else from here been helping out?

Fantastic vid that really captures the excitement of the day. Can't wait to see the footage of the cameracar. :D

Hey Heidi i:welcome:

It's the slightly mad Australian vet here :D Only got home an hour ago, helped Alison to tidy up and then she got a pic with James. I chose not to as he looked hot and tired & still had more filming to do. He did however remember me from last time!

Oh by the way everyone

James said "Give my love to Final Gear" how sweet is that?

And i've been recruiting, telling people about FG (not FTP's tho ;))

Will post a couple of pics from today when i get a chance.
Am back there tomorrow, will try to get up to the site & get some pics although it's forecast to bucket down, after today's glorious sunshine. Which i largely missed, but i don't care! :D

Oh boy that does sounds like a great way to spend the day. I am certainly very jealous. Clearly you made an impression on James or he looked you up and realized you'd never said "anything horrid" about him. As if there was anything horrid to say anyway.

As long as you only recruit cool people. We like cool people. :-D Funny thing is when I saw Heidi's introduction post I thought "oh look, ozgirl is recruiting people."

I'm interested in the varying popularity for the different toys. I can hardly be bothered about Scaletrix. I'm not sure we even have it in the US, but if we do I certainly never played with it. Meccano/erector set is sort of cool in theory but again I never had one so I'm not just enamored. Same with trains and plastacine. But Lego, lord everyone loves Lego. I wonder if it's been the most popular event. I would still love the opportunity to go and build something really big and really cool out of Lego.

I think a large loud Australian with mad hair sticks out a bit...;)

Heh heh "one of us" ;)

Heidi is a very cool "not-a-dude" who was organising us today before spending 24 hours travelling the length & breadth of England!

I promise i will get more pics tomorrow, of the site and works in progress, and then post them all. I will try & get a pic of James, but just hated to annoy him when he looked so pooped, it was really hot today - well for England!
We thought James wasn't going to be there tomorrow as his new book comes out (as per LC) but Jules (head organiser guy @ Plumpictures) says yes. I was going anyway, they are a bit behind so really want to help. Denbies is a really pretty spot, as you saw in the foundation picture, oh, and autoporn today in Surrey:
1 AM V8 Vantage
1 AM DB9 Volante - with the top down of course!
1 Rolls
1 Bentley
1 Merc CL65 AMG
1 Maserati Quattroporte
1 Porsche Cayman S
*sigh* i love driving through Surrey :D

My brothers had all the stuff: scalextric, lego, meccano and a trainset. I loved playing with them and if I had been a sweet little sister, my brothers might even let me. :D

Looking forward to your pics, Ozgirl. Have fun tomorrow and say hi to James from me. (If he ever needs a place to crash in Amsterdam....)

Hello, Heidi! :welcome: Far as I know ozgirl is the only one of us who is close and has time to build. I'd be there if it wasn't on another continent!

And, as usual, ozgirl, I'm absolutely green with envy. My offer of an afternoon trade still stands. :)

For either of you Lego-inclined ladies, we'd love to see pics if you have any! As long as the show doesn't have any rules about posting photos before the house is complete, that is.

Tyco (now owned by Mattel) had basically mini Scaletrix. The cars were about the same size as HotWheels. I had a ton of them when I was a kid, my brothers and I would gather all the neighborhood kids, make as big a track as we could through the house (which usually pissed our mom off) and race each other. Since I was the youngest, I had to run around and pick up crashed cars.

I always wanted an erector set, but I could never find a kit with enough parts, and buying 4 or 5 sets was too expensive.

My neighbor had a huge train set in their basement. We would spend hours running the trains. We even made our own scenery out of balsa wood and clay. I remember we made a winter scene with fake snow and everything for Christmas, and all of us kids had a party playing with the trains.

But the best toy of all was Lego. We had an enormous box of blocks. As hard as we tried, we could never build anything large enough to utilize all of them before some jerk pulled a Godzilla.

It's a little sad that I'm waiting to relive my childhood through some show on tv. One of these days, I should just go out and buy myself a set of everything. I was so much more productive as a kid.

It is nice having a man...er woman...on the ground so to speak. Looking forward to the pictures.

I like pictures of hot sweaty men by the way. The only thing sexier than a man that has been doing hot sweaty work is a man with a mop. (I know, but I don't think it is a secret by this time that I am more than a little bit weird)

Weren't we all, skidd!! I wish I had *half* the energy I had as a kid.

Definitely seconding this. Would be fun just to see more behind the scenes pics.

Right back at ya, James!!
You're a scholar and a gentleman!

Thanks for the reports ladies. Like I posted on Twitter I didn't immediately realize it was so late over there. I'm glad everyone had such a nice day. There were some pictures of James schlepping boxes of bricks over on another board. It definitely looked like everyone was really working hard versus the more party atmosphere from the other weekend.

Spicysaurus, I checked the weather in Dorking on weather.com. It was 68F today/yesterday. I think we need to have a little "discussion" with Ozgirl on the meaning of the word hot. :p Teasing of course. Mostly.

Skidd, interesting we have a "scaletrix" here. I guess my brother and I and our friends weren't particularly interested. I knew people with erector sets and train sets and stuff but the only one I was really into was Lego. I know I posted here once that probably the best present I ever got was a big box of Legos for my 20th birthday. It made me smile then and now.

Edit (long time later): Skylock, I was thinking about your post while doing dishes because it reminded me of a running joke on another (mostly female) message board that I frequent. What you're describing with men with mops is what we call "chorn," which is short for chore porn. It's what you get when you catch your man running the vacuum or doing the dishes or mowing the lawn or what not. LindenChase got most of the pictures but missed James with a broom, which is almost a mop. :)
