Need For Speed: Shift

Alright, i've managed to get my head round the handling and mapped my wheel as well... in normal racing its mostly fine, i've set it to a near zero dead zone and 5% on braking and throttle. But in drifts anytime i touch the throttle or steering it flies off at 80% revs and almost full lock one way, i've tried coming in slowly and fast, nothing works, not even the handbrake... do they expect you to fiddle with the sensitivities for everytime you need to drift?

I've already decided drift is impossible and I'm not going to attempt it anymore. Why would you have a separate handling engine for that?? It will roast the tires taking off in 5th gear...

My thoughts

Handling is great
-Cars feel so much more alive than FM2 or GT4/5. Very much like GT legends or whatever
-Racing suspension makes the car very stiff, so consequently much harder to drive on rough tracks

Presentation is astounding
-Best visual effects of any racing game
-More fun to drive any car than any other game

So my only reserve is the controls, and some of the bugs (loading screens stick often). I've finally dialed in the controls, but why couldn't they do that for me? Its never been more fun to push an Escort Cosworth around the Nuburgring or Spa.

Judging by the gamespot review, I will not buy this game (my ps3 is not yet repaired anyway - see my thread).

Agree with the Escort Cosworth, i failed to win in the first race because of kbhell and bought it with my 23k, quite fun from bone stock all the way to Works level.

Funnest cars are, IMO (so far)

-Escort Cosworth
-Shelby GT500
-Mazda MX5
-E36 M3

The higher level cars are fast as hell, but not as fun to me.

I'm really unsatisfied with the rotary sounds. Its like they took a stock S4 13b and put on a really shitty exhaust system to record the sound (like Forza ) Why can't they put in a 3 rotor for the works RX8??

Here is a decent sounding 13BT (like most of them really)

Or if they really want something raw, at least make it sound evil...

Both the RX7 and RX8 on shift sound like chainsaws...it just makes me mad because all the other cars sound sooo good (like all of the BMW's sound gorgeous)

[/rant]

How poor did those with dead zone at 30 do on their setup lap thing, my deadzone was put to zero immediately!

it was horrible!! I had to restart like 10 times just to get a poll position  My deadzone was 33%

First impressions are... absolutely amazing game.

The sense of speed is the best I've ever seen. Everything from highway and autocross speed all the way to 150+ feels just right. I never had to look at the speedo to know exactly how fast I was going.

I used to say Grid got the closest to the excitement during a race, but that was pretty superficial. The feeling you get in Shift is 85% of the right stuff in terms of adrenaline and nerves and such. You're really only missing the rivalries and the pressure from the crowd.

The physics, so far with tier 1/lower tier 2 cars, are really on the Forza level to me. It does things differently than Forza 2, but I would say the simulation is about the same level. People don't give this game enough credit IMO. No, it's no LFS, but I'd say it's between Forza 2 and Race Pro, just ever so slightly above Forza 2 (the only reason I say so is Shift feels more alive and Forza 2 seems too stiff and binary). In terms of what they set out to do I'd say they succeeded, bringing Need for Speed into the console sim world right up there with Forza and Race Pro (haven't played GT5).

The only truly odd thing I've noticed is the brakes. It's best to brake without making any tire noise at all, because any more than that and the car will try to swap ends with the smallest upset (including steering). It's like every car, including the stock cars, have way too much rear brake bias.

The AI... that's a tough one, because they do show a high level of adaption and improvisation. However, they do 2 really annoying things:

1. They sometimes straight up don't brake for corners and slam into the back of you.

2. They swerve on the straights.

Other than that they do seem to think about things and try new things. Also, I noticed that they adapt to the driver skill. I started out on "hard" and they were too slow. Now they're right on my pace, maybe a little bit faster than me. I've switched to Medium and they seem like a good enough challenge without being aggravating (except for the weaving and the not-braking).

Not a disappointment at all! So far this is the most fun racing game on the Xbox.

I got my hands on the game yesterday, and its been pretty good fun so far.

However, the steering seems to be twitch as hell. I'm on keyboard, so I can't really modulate the throttle, but even then my Escort Cosworth seems to constantly fishtail all over the place, making it hard to stay clean throughout the race....

Its damn near impossible to setup for the corkscrew at laguna seca without ABS so I'm leaving it on. :) I'm back up to the pro handling mode though, which makes it quite a bit more fun. Mclaren F1 @ Nurburgring on pro is insanely awesome.

We should post pics of our cars. My Big Mac :D I'm appreciating the fact that you can't put ludicrous body kits on the top level cars. A Mclaren or Zonda with flared arches would be sacrilege.

Photo mode has no AA though :(

So how many have an Escort Cosworth? I'd like to find out, it's great and tremendously fun! And flatout through Eau Rouge is tough!

Chrome and Flat Murcielago FTW

Are you getting those through needforspeed.com? Cause I can't find my screenshots, and it doesn't show my achievements either.

Yes. You have to register from the game I think, then when you go to need for speed, log in with your xbox-live associated email. That's what I did anyways.

You have to remember though, virtually nothing but Formula cars can do flat out through Eau Rouge. Get that corner wrong and the car just bounces into the wall.

Right on. I was using the wrong email.

The site saves the images in a really wonkey brightness so I had to edit them to make them visible. :\

^ That last one is what happens when the AI forgets to brake. :\

Yeah I had to adjust the aspect ratio of mine. I don't have a widescreen tv, so they came out all long and strange.

Just tried out this game. The racing physics is pretty realistic, but the drifting physics is just completely utterly fucking wrong. Have they even drifted a car? I guess this is the result of EA rushing the game out of the developers don't have time to properly collect data for the drift cars, so they just made up the handling physics as they go. Why do they have to make a separate handling physics for drift events anyways? The racing physics was fine for drifting. When I was doing the time trials in the BMW 135i, I was sliding a lot of corners, it felt very natural. Damn it, why does EA need to fuck up the drifting! I was really hoping for a good game.

Game is just unplayable on the 360 controller, going to return it as a deposit on FM3. Might rent it again in a few weeks if they release a patch for it ...

Works perfectly on mine, just set steering deadzone to 15%, sensitivity to 35%, high speed sensitivity 100%.

Ive now seen the credits roll
not the longest game but havent been doing much else this weekend :?
