Windows 7, so who's tried it?

Possible? Yes. Recommended? Probably not. Half the point of installing a nes OS is to start clean, i.e., get rid of all the old crap lingering around that's slowing you down.

Well I just ordered the Professional Version for $43 with my student discount. Aw yeah!

I can't wait to replace vista on my laptop.

Should I also get a copy to replace XP on my desktop? I use it primarily for gaming, so I'd be slightly worried about incompatibilities.

[Question type="N00b"]

Is it better to back up all of your files and wipe the primary HD clean before installing 7 or is it possible to bypass all that

[/Nubitude]

If you don't want to backup your files, do the "custom install". It will move all your files into a folder and then set up a fresh install of win 7 for you so you'll have a clean registry and the snappiness of a new install, but you'll will still have all your old porn and stuff ;)

As for your question about if you should get windows 7, check viper's post on the previous page.

Thanks guys! And no actually Jeffy, it wasn't a question of IF, it was a question of WHEN

Take the plunge man. I was one of those who stayed away from vista till just a few months ago, but I'm pleasantly surprised with 7. They did a much better job of working the bugs out beforehand this time around. Even though it's new, it's rock solid and it feels quite a bit quicker than the most recent Vista. It's already a nice upgrade in just about every way, and it will only get better.

Is it possible to install Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools on Windows 7? DT isn't officially supported on 7, but Alcohol should be. But I still get the reboot prompt during install on both programs. If there's another virtual drive program that works, please share. Thanks.

Thanks for the links. +rep.

One more question, I'm trying to install the Chinese language pack for Win7, but it always fails. I tried installing it in safe mode also, still couldn't get it to work. I found a post on another forum that said language packs can only be installed on Win7 Ultimate or slipstreamed in during install. Is there any other way to do it? Thanks.

You need the ultimate edition.

Thanks for the info. But damn, that's just some more typical M$ bullshit. Even my XP Home was able to install the East Asian Language pack. I guess I'll have to aquire Ultimate.

I thought you only needed Ultimate to be able to switch back and forth from language to language?

Is it that hard for you to believe that something new might be better than what came before it?

Do this:

* Pin nothing but Firefox (or whatever other shitty browser you use) to your taskbar. It's right there and easy to start, and it ensures it's always on the left.
* Pin everything else you use a lot to your Start Menu. It's only an extra click away than Quick Launch but is less clutter.
* Use the Start Menu search box for everything else (start typing and press enter).

I like to do the first step with the taskbar because I usually have a lot of things open and I like to see the labels next to the icons on the taskbar and I only have them combine when full so it's quicker to see what's open without always having to use the thunmnail preview thing.....but I don't do the other steps. I like to have firefox pinned.

Do you think it would be a good idea to have a thread called "Optimizing and customizing Windows 7" for any discoveries, tips for speeding up the machine, suggestions that people have for software, or registry "hacks" or should we maybe keep 'em all here?

I prefer the 7 taskbar to Vista's. Vista is like... UT2003. It's like... Window 7 BETA. LET IT GO.

I was debating about grabbing Win 7 ASAP rather than waiting for a couple of weeks before getting it. This is because I know that new OSs come with a bag full of issues, but is it the case with 7? I'm really eager to get out of the Vista universe.

People will hate me for saying this, but to me Win7 seems like Vista that actually works, ergo nothing revolutionary. Altho I would still be kind cautious untill a SP was closing up.

IT WORKS!!!!! :D

I downloaded a torrent for the retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate x64, burned it, verified it, installed it on a new partition, and here I am!!!

Now, I need to transfer my files from the Vista partition. Should I do an "Easy Transfer", or should I just manually copy them over to the Win7 partition?

Also, how do I make my Win7 partition the main one (or just big enough to store everything from the Vista partition)? The Vista partition is 387 GB and the Win7 partition is 78GB.

Just put in my order for the 7 upgrade for my laptop. Now I am awating approval. This should be good.
