The "New Toys" Thread

You people who rave on about how cheaper "PC's" (Macs are PCs aswell) are. Make a configuration and prove it.

The entry-level 27" iMac is certainly a bargain compared to other alternatives, but the high-end one is nip-and-tuck.

I just put together a PC on newegg with similar specs and a 27" monitor for a total of $1,274.89.....and that's with some really good stuff added in like a Logitech gaming keyboard and Antec 900 case, and that still leaves over $400 to upgrade it even further (to get a better CPU, video card, etc). So there's no doubt you could get better specs on a PC for that price. The entry level 27" iMac is not really a "bargain".

Is this 27" screen a LED backlit IPS 2560-by-1440 resolution screen?

... Did not think so.

What ever you built isn't going to be a ultra-slim all-in-one either.

All the 27" monitors on Newegg are cheap TN panels. If you start with something halfway decent, like a Dell 2709W, you're already out $880 and only have $820 left for the rest of the components, and it still won't be an all-in-one like the iMac or have as high of a resolution.

EDIT: Seems like Lilleput scooped all of us. :p

Also, a PC makes you a social outcast. A Mac will get you laid.

The Dell 2709W could be had for about $750, so that would bring my total up to $1665, which is still a bit cheaper :) But yes, I see that the iMac has a very sweet monitor.....

Personally, I like to be able to customize my PC and add new drives in, etc., so I would never buy anything "all-in-one". To each his own I guess. Again, I have nothing against Mac users, I just don't think there is anything "superior" about Macs (besides the monitor, heh).

those all-in-one are for non computer users, they like the design AND don't care what is inside.
Thought they are like group animals, if 1 think mac = heaven, they all think so.

There is no need to swap out parts in a PC, unless they break.. Or you play Games but no one buys a Mac because they want to crank out the mad FPS in Crysis.. And we're back to getting laid.

Too low resolution. Add this and then it's a fair comparison. :)

I'm glad we have come to a conclusion.

And adding bigger hard drives.....And of course I game, so that's one of the main reasons why I like PCs.

I'd honestly rather have two smaller monitors anyways for multi-tasking. Again, to each his own.

My iMac comes with 2TB of storage, if i can't cut down my porn collection there are always External drives.

If you play PC games you're not allowed to diss Mac's :p

With a screen that is 2560 wide you can have two full-width browser windows open next to each other.

Having two low resolution screens wont help with sweet quality media playback which i think the iMac is very geared towards.

haha, why's that?

And the 27" iMac only comes with 1TB, so you'd have to dish out even more to upgrade it to 2TB....

Yeah, but it's a known fact that having two monitors speeds up the work flow because you can quickly maximize a program on each monitor for example.

As far as media playback, I really don't see the point in having a monitor with a resolution that stretches HD content beyond 1920 x 1080, because of course you would want to watch stuff in full screen mode, otherwise there's no point in having a monitor that big.

I manage networks for a living. Try it yourself, it's not difficult if you're not totally incompetent, especially the simple home networks most people use.

Exactly....In Vista and Windows 7, you don't even have to "set" anything up. It does it automatically at the time of install. 2 of the PCs on my network are still running XP and there's no issues at all.

You can just install Windows on your Mac and game all you want nowadays.

Yes, but PC gamers like to buy new video cards every couple years, and they like to tinker with overclocking and adding bigger heatsinks to their CPU's etc (sort of like a geeky version of building/tuning a race car). Won't be doing any of that on a Mac.....

In a couple years when the ATI Radeon HD 4850 struggles to run the latest games, PC gamers can simply open their case and pop in an upgrade. iMac users on the other hand will be stuck with it.
