I've gotten good with guessing exposures having used my 50/1.8 Series E a lot on my D40 (no metering).

But, also, I first took an exposure with the ISO cranked way up and the aperture wide open and calculated it from there.

It's exactly the same.
 
No, D-lighting isn't the same as photomatix crank-the-saturation-to-NINE-THAOSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!
