The 2010 South Africa world cup qualifiers thread

Don't forget Ngog. ;)

All teams have divers, don't try to paint any as saints. Gerrard is one of the worst.

Reyes did catch a cleat to the calf muscle there. Still, he doesn't play for Arsenal anymore.

EDIT: Apparently the Irish FA has sent a formal petition to FIFA requesting a replay for the Henry hand ball. They're citing the 2005 Uzbekistan-Bahrain replay, which was also called for because of referee error.

They'll not get it, and the longer they play the victim, the less sympathy they will get.

The thing about football which makes it so great is that sometimes, indeed a lot of the time, the best team does not win. No other sport is like that and it is what makes it so compelling.

Thierry Henry cheats and Zidane headbutts. Why do people like the french national team again? Materazzi looks like a saint in comparison.

France sucks.

yup, the french have already screwed up this cup. roughly destroyed football these days, that's why i got rid off watching fake football. FIFA is dead.

Disagree ^ , the 2010 World Cup is going to great.

This incident is not relevant and will soon be forgotten, media half-life for stories is measured in hours these days.

ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Chile could be kicked out of the World Cup unless Chilean club Rangers drops a court case by Dec. 3 contesting its disputed demotion to the second division of the national soccer league.

CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American soccer, said Thursday it was notified by FIFA about the possible sanction.

Rangers were deducted three points for using six foreign players -- the limit is five -- in a league match on Nov. 8. The three points cost them relegation to the second division, and last week they appealed the case to a Chilean court.

Chile, which has not played in the World Cup since 1998, is one of five South American nations that have qualified for next year's tournament in South Africa.

Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay have also qualified.

The appeal by Rangers has forced the Chilean league to suspend play in its postseason playoffs.

"If Rangers don't drop the case, then FIFA could expel (the national federation) because they can't expel a club," Harold Mayne-Nicholls, president of the Chilean federation, said on radio Agricultura. "This could bring consequences that would be deadly for Chilean football."

Update: The club has withdrawn their complaint and Chile will stay in the World Cup. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=704466&sec=worldcup2010&cc=5901

FIFA are a bit like software companies - they'll do anything to keep football out of court. Last time they failed to do that, it ended up with Bosman.

Final Draw Friday 4th December 2009 at 19:00 local time

The glare of the global football world will be on the Cape Town International Convention Centre at 7pm next Friday 4 December 2009, when the 32 teams who made it through to Africa?s first FIFA World Cup? and their legions of fans find out exactly where they will be playing - and who they will be playing against.

FIFA 2010 World Cup website ? Final Draw Friday 4th December, 2009

The draw for the initial Group Stage of the competition makes a BIG difference to progress into later stages of the cup. So if you are supporting a team, be sure to watch the draw or check it out later.

I look forward media's predictable behaviour, who every time christen one of the groups, ?The Group of Death?

Do we know when they'll announce how each pot will be setup?

And I think someone should setup a World Cup 2010 thread that day for discussion about the draw and everything leading up to World Cup and the event itself.

I am hoping that the United States draws New Zealand, North Korea and South Africa

I just hope they don't put Serbia in some funny group, like they did during the last World Cup.

Pot 1 (seeds): South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England

Pot 2 (Asia, Oceania and North/Central America): Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Mexico, Honduras

Pot 3 (Africa and South America): Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay

Pot 4 (Europe): France, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia

So all 4 UEFA Playoff qualifers don't get to be seeded, included Les Handballs (aka France).

Would the best case scenario for the USA would be a draw with South Africa, Slovenia and... who from Pot 3?

Not these:
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria
They are ?Home? teams for the otherwise neutral crowd at the games and none share borders with the RSA so probably no political history for them to be upset about.

Don?t know much about Algerian football, so skip them they could be an unwelcome surprise.

Have the USA played friendlies recently against Paraguay, Chile or Uruguay? The Goal article says the Chile ships a lot of goals, so if you could stop them scoring, then Chile maybe?

Agreed, well avanti was this thread?s OP, so if he checks in maybe he will start the new thread with the draw results on Friday, as the first post. I like continuity & tradition. :)
(Then this Thread can be closed.)

That's a nice summary.

As an Australian, the idea of drawing England is appetising. We've got a good recent record against them & both will have large supporter bases in RSA. Plus it's a national rivalry that England would rather avoid.

The group of defence might be like watching paint dry. It's a bit unfair on the Dutch to put them in there - yes they couldn't score a goal against Aus in the recent friendly, but they were rusty & were all over us & just couldn't put the final shot away.

No matter who we draw, we need this bloke over anyone else: Mark Schwarzer - greatest ever Socceroo. Remember what happened when Guus put Kalac in for no good reason last WC?
