60k miles between oil changes is ok, right?

If you knew how many people think, I mean REALLY think that engine oil is permanent, you may lose faith in your fellow humans. I see examples like this BMW too frequently.

I went to get my oil changed and I noticed the mechanic was rebuilding an engine that said "Lexus" somewhere. I laughed.
-Weren?t those things supposed to be reliable?
-Yes, but when the oil in the engine is still the same since it left the factory...
-Are you kidding?!? How many miles?
-About 50,000.

Well there's your problem.

Well, it just occurred me:
Since my car needs a liter every 1,000miles, it would be out of oil before getting THAT bad.

Like jay said, I'm not suprised at all by this. The car IQ of people in the US is shockingly low. I've seen a guy put brake fluid in the gas tank before. I bet this happens alot.

I know people who change their oil every 8k miles and amazingly they are still running years later.

Some manufacturers recommend 8-10K oil change intervals, sometimes with synthetic.

I change the oil on the Focus when I can be arsed to ruin my knees and my back on the stupid driveway stone and remove the damned right front wheel.

Whoever decided my parking pad should be paved in sharp stones the size of walnuts needs to be smacked, and whoever decided that I should have to take the wheel off to be able to get at the oil filter and drain plug from a ground jack needs to be smacked twice.

(Also: Added bonus of the stone driveway is that in some spots a jack is gloriously ineffective because the stone is thicker and thus just compresses. One of these days that thing's going to get some Interstate-grade asphalt.)

I'm talking about 90's Golfs and E36's with 200k+ miles;)

Technically, if they've been using synthetic, they can get away with that. You can get a synth oil that's supposed to be "good" for 15K intervals now.

I wouldn't do that, but apparently it works for some people.

If someone can neglect such a simple piece of automotive maintenance it makes you wonder what else they neglect to do. Makes you feel safe being on the same roads as them doesn't it?

I wrote "bmw service indicator" into Google and pressed I am lucky. Google says:

All the 'Service Engine Soon' light does is come on every once in a while to remind you that your local dealer needs more money.

A fail so hard it's almost a win. How the hell is that thing still running. You would have noticed the engine sounding a little rough, no?

If the light tells me to, I'll give the dealer more money. It's a good thing to have that light come on once a year, I would be the guy in the BMW otherwise.

I have a light that tells me I need oil too, it's called an oil pressure light and it comes on every time I slow down once the oil is starting to get low. Which is every other month.

I'm not all that shocked by this really. Besides, I want to say most BMW owners (I am not really included in this bunch) really get those low end BMWs just to get the roundel symbol. It annoys me to all hell if you get a car just because of the emblem. Like they drive a 323i and think its the shit, just because its a BMW and then they don't take care of it. If you're proud of what you got, then cool, just don't be retarded and follow the damn directions. There is an owner's manual for a reason....and don't buy a car that you can't maintain....

Besides, most of the people that drive the bimmers anyway aren't really enthusiasts and think everything magically works better in their car than a honda because it has 'magic oil' or something. Sadly, this is just one example of many.

And next time when you drive by someone that has a bimmer, even if they have an M, have you ever thought "well that person looks like a spoiled brat" or "doesn't he look like a douche" (of course this is coming from the point of view of someone that lives in upstate NY where everything has to be american made)

-fyi, i get the "doesn't he look like a douche" all the time...hahhahahahah
