'97 VW Mk3 Golf VR6

So is this the 2.8 or the 2.9 V6?

And actually, I've looked at the open engine of my friend's Passat and those V6's are almost straight six engines. Very small angle...

Its the 2.8, Australia never got the Syncro versions as far as I know. Yeah they are extremely narrow, something like 15 degree banks compared to about 45 (?) on usual V-config engines. :) Guess it helps with shoehorning such a fat motor into a little FWD nuggetbox!

Hmm, I dunno. You could have just bought some VW keys off of eBay. :p

EDIT: Actually, that's not a bad idea. I think I'll buy an Aston Martin key on eBay and claim I own one on here... :D

Awesome car, I had one for two months that was in a rather pitiful shape (I was ripped off, the seller did an awesome job of covering up all the faults).

I still miss the engine sound...

Although I have a faster Golf now woohoo!

don't you have any restrictions as a young driver, regarding BHP? :? here you can't drive a car until 18 and than you're not allowed to drive anything which has more than 100 BHP, until you turn 24..

and nice car, btw  they're extremely rare in such good condition.. ;)

Excellent looking Golf. Appears to be in great condition, so you'll have alot of fun driving that for quite some time.

Sweet Mk3 dude, i love the fact its a 4 door:-D

Thank you very much for the kind words guys, the appreciation is overwhelming :D

Since I haven't really posted here in a bajillion years, I figured I might aswell keep you all updated on everything that has happened in the last year and three months that I've had the car.

26th March 2010:

Mk4 GTI wheels, which are a direct fit and even at my height I shouldn't have any rubbing problems provided I run 45 profile tyres. The bug has started nibbling :D

Then... Three days later, 29th March:

And the other car, a Camry:

She's down, but not out. I think my wheels have to wait for a while :D

15th April:
-Heater core replaced
-Crash damage fixed
-New rear brake pads
-100k KM major service (motor/gearbox oil, coolant flush.. etc etc)

Pics of the heater core job, OHMYGOD thank god it's out of the way:

Seeing this makes me cringe. F88k getting stuck into that!

Another angle, shows it much clearer

Yup, that is the dashboard on the roof

28th April 2010:
Moar exhaust noise pls!

The old:

The VR6's have a large-ass resonator known as the 'suitcase muffler' in the exhaust system. Simply chopping it out and replacing it with a straight pipe is a common thing to do for quick sound at bugger all costs. I've looked into doing it for several weeks but never had the time, spare cash or cojones to try it - until now ;)

When I went into the exhaust shop to take a looksie, the bloke was surprised. He had done the very same car just a few years ago! Sweeet. So it turns out that I have a completely new stainless steel system from the cat back, with 2 inch piping and a smaller resonator here and there. That's why it's louder than a standard VR6 but not TOOOO loud, which is what the previous owner was after. I said no thanks to that, I want some volume - cut out the resonator in place of the standard suitcase, and put a straight piece of stainless there. No problemo was the answer, it'll be about $90.

http://img192.imageshack.**/img192/269/280520101759.jpg

I watched as the exhaust fella did his magic (the same one who did the original system on my car too) and started cutting out the old resonator. Bang. It fell to the ground with a clatter and rolled away

http://img218.imageshack.**/img218/2705/280520101762.jpg

After some mucking around with a few pipes, we found one that suited. It's 2.25", so it's still slightly bigger than the rest of the piping, but meh good enough for me! Welded it on and sprayed it with black exhaust paint so it looks normal-ish, and brought the car down.

The very second he started it up, my mouth shot from an expression of curiosity to a grin so wide I could barely fit it through the shop's roller doors! And that was when I told him to rev it so I could record it:

I love it, I can't get enough of it, and it cost me less than a dinner for two. F12k yeah! :D

22nd June 2010:
Clutch died :D The clutch fork had pretty much broken in half and was fouling on the pressure plate, the noise was terrible! Got that all done, along with some decent tyres put on the Mk4 wheels and mounted onto the car.

22nd July:
I wanted more induction noise, but I didn't feel like getting in trouble with the police for having an open pod filter installed. So, after reading several guides and getting some opinions on what to do, I traced and cut the lower left corner off the existing airbox, which faces the headlight and guard.

Cleaned out the K&N filter, went out for a test drive and WOW. No videos or anything, but my first thought was HOLY CRAP THIS IS LOUD ON FULL THROTTLE. Instant wub.

21st August:
Mangled the f**ken back end cause I'm an idiot. Bodgy home respray job on the arch, just to make sure the damn thing doesn't rust.. Confirmed my thoughts that it'll need a respray sometime down the track! :D

Good as new. Sort of. A little bit. Not really. :D

Today:
Apart from some minor cosmetic stuff that I've done (remove spoiler, cut up the antenna a la 'stubby' style, clear front indicators) that's how the car stands so far. Coming soon after my final exams is a proper VR6 lip, OEM-spec from Germany, and a GIAC chipped ECU. I have some fairly good plans for 2011, let's just see if everything works out! :)

must be my connection, but i cant see any of your pics mate!!

love the VR6, best car to get it in IMO was the corrado... that odd-ish looking coupe.

btw you got me looking on auto trader now to see how cheap i can get some VR6 action

Very cool! Probably a bit late too, but congrats on getting your P's :)

Also, whose R32 is that next to it in the last pic??? :D

I don't even know how to start this post properly (ha, but I just did, see!) so here goes. Updates. More money spent. Things taken to another level. Stuff ordered brand new and custom. More fitment, more lows, more power, more stopping. Life's goooooood :D

Suspension was upgraded from the old Eibach spring/Koni damper combination to brand new KW V2 inox-line coilovers shipped to me from Germany.

Wheels are now no longer anywhere near OEM specs, with a set of brand new WORK Meister S1 2-piece wheels replacing them. Also ordered brand new from the folks over in Japan, made exclusively to fit the VR6 (and I suppose the Mk4 GTI, with which it shared its hubs). Standard BBS sizes were 15x6.5 ET43 all around, these are now 17x8 ET15 front and 17x9 ET20 rear. Big brake disc and deep dish disc respectively - more on that later.

Engine is reeeeeeeeally far from standard now. Purchased another 12v VR6 off a mate who was building up a track car and decided to call it quits and scrap it - brand new, freshly rebuilt - bored from 2.8 to 3.0, forged pistons and conrods, compression raised from 10:1 to 11:1 (this means 9000rpm!), the Schrick variable geometry intake manifold, oversized valves and the party piece... 290* Cat camshafts. Real N/A brawler, thing's ridiculous. Been in the car for 3000km and despite not having a standalone ECU to tune it yet (ran outta money, see) its NUCKING FUTS. April 29th dyno day should see me have a baseline power figure pre-tuning, eventually I expect 170kw at the front wheels or about 300bhp. Maybe more, maybe less? Anyone's guess. We'll see :D

Brakes were the final partypiece and purchased from the same mate who had the engine. Brembo Granturismo BBK for the Mk4 GTI on the front,, 330mm discs with 4-piston calipers and braided lines. And bloody hell does this thing stop now. Pulled my face right into the windscreen! More than enough for a 1150kg hatchback.

Hell of a first car o_O Congtrats!

So engine tuning is allowed with P-Plates, as long as it stays N/A?
Very funny you can have this, but a Golf 1.2 TSI is forbidden^^
