Court in Lahore rules men's noses, ears be cut off

A PAKISTANI court has ordered two brothers should have their noses and ears cut off after they were found guilty of doing the same to a woman who refused to marry one of them.

The two brothers, Sher Mohammad and Amanat Ali, abducted their 22-year-old cousin, Fazeelat Bibi, at gunpoint in September after her father refused to let her marry Mohammad.

"They put a noose around her neck and tried to strangle her. After failing to do so, Sher Mohammad chopped of her nose and two ears with a knife," government prosecutor Ehtesham Qadir said.

The mother of the girl died of heart attack on seeing the condition of her daughter.

The judge at an anti-terrorism court in the eastern city of Lahore handed down the sentences on Monday in line with the Islamic law of Qisas.
The law was introduced in Pakistan during the military rule of General Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq in 1979. It stipulates punishment equal to the crime, akin to an eye-for-an-eye, unless the culprit is pardoned by the victim or the victim's family.

Such sentences are rarely handed down by Pakistani courts and have always been revoked on appeal.

The court also sentenced the pair to life in prison, Qadir said.

This seems slightly awesome. Yeah I know there are people who say this is unjust and wont change the fact that people will still kill/rape/steal etc...but at least this gives the family some real justification as harsh as it maybe.

This is the stupidest policy since the British parliament tried to combat drunkeness by prohibiting the sale of any amount of gin that was smaller than a gallon.
 
I think thats fair.
I also think that the western world should adopt the practise in a couple of muslim countries, where they punish thieves by chopping their hands off.
Hard to steal then, isnt it?

?Only a degree removed from the animal.? Also, ?Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilized - the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals.?

If it were my daughter, then it would very much be a case of an eye for an eye, ear, hand, teeth, face, foot, house, penis.

That's pretty 13th century right there. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'd hazard to call it real justice, but then again ... they tried to hang the girl, then mutilated her, then her mom died. And I'll venture a guess that there's not going to be some miraculously skilled plastic surgeon to repair the damage pro bono. So to hell with them.

If, God forbid, something like that happens to you, what would you do? How would you like to 'treat' the two brothers?

In principal I don't think the eye for an eye is a good way to deal with justice, however this is Pakistan and the two brothers shouldnt be surprised by the verdict.

In truth, he's already dead, died from liver cancer in april. And yeah, he was a cute snuggle cat. Grey with grey nose, heavy fur.

Still. I don't think we should execute people who kills cats, though.

Well yeah, some cats are ugly and bitchy. Remember, I said cute snuggle-cats. that's an entirely different matter. Beyond that and anyone who touches MY family, the eye for an eye thing is stupid.

Lets talk about your family, not your cats.
 
Why? The point still stands, if we are to put too much weight on the wish of the victim or his/hers family, there will time and time again be the case that they will want extreme punishments, and that just doesn't fly.

And my irrational wish to do bad things to people who harm my family is still not justice, it's irrational wish for revenge.
 
Every time the court has handed down a ruling like this it's been overturned on appeal. So the bastards might get to keep their faces intact ... while they spend the rest of their lives in prison.
