Pick a new car for my mom

Prius bad.

... I like the idea of the Passat r36, but I don't know if they sell it here in the US.

hehe, glad you don't like the Prius :)
And the passat, i do not know about us, but here I see them pretty often and they're awsome! even the german police uses them alongside the regular unlimited M5's (i live near the border so autobahn-land is not far away :D)

Are the U.S. Passats still made in Germany?

I did not know they made wagons of them.:|

I googled a picture I wish I still didn't

Meh, it's not that bad.

Sounds like the kinda mom who'd like a crossover.
And since she's used to luxury:

-Acura ZDX
-Audi Q5
-Cadillac SRX
-Lincoln MKX
-Mercedes GLK

Personally I'm really not a fan of any, but I know my mom likes em all:)

I quite like the GLK to be honnest...a bit clunky but looks quite good, the audi is beautifull from the back, but the front :barf:

How much hauling room are we talking about here? Everyone's listing bigger vehicles but there's always the A3 which should get even better mpg while maintaining her expected luxury and handling if she really wants to downsize.

That's a weird X-Type

On topic, a new S4 should almost get twice the 12mpg. Looks like there is no S3 in the US, for "less car, but still luxurious" that'd be just the ticket.

Forester XT or Outback 3.6R

Subaru Outback, I would suppose. Maybe try to find a 2009 model if she wary of the 2010's looks. Myself, I think a Legacy has always been a "classless" vehicle: it looks good in front of a manor house, a Boston Brownstone or a rustic cabin.

Could always get one of the real Jaguar wagons and not that silly X-Type/Mondeo/Volvo wagon thing.

Yes, it really was built by Jaguar (with Alvis), has four doors, a big boot, and kicks much ass.
