The Android thread

No copy and paste out the gate..no support for sideloading (wouldnt be a problem but one has to pay a 100 buck fee to enter the WM marketplace...killing the chances for small group (or even one person) app developers)...Multitasking for only MS core apps at launch...No HD2 support (come ON MS....this phone has it all but you decide to just kill sales in the US just because of two buttons..WTF!?)

Android's looking better and better for me. HD2 w/ 6.5 or a Android phone...decisions, decisions.

Get the HD2. I'm sure there are many people what are working tirelessly to get 2.1 fully functional for it. Also, I'd be a bit surprised if HTC doesn't come out with an Android version at this point.

The Desire or Supersonic is pretty much the HD2 with Android isn't it?

If the hardware is very similar, then it should speed up the porting process.

Yeah, i hope so. There's Android for the Omnia (my current phone) but it's very incomplete and can't do voice and data on the CDMA Verizon version.

I still love my HD2, but I see a high possibility of it being the last WM device I'll ever own. Might even just keep it in the car as a GPS Navigator when I get a new handset if the trade-in price is crap.

Hopefully when I'm ready for a new phone Android will have fully matured. I've always liked the idea of Android, but the execution still needs refining.

BTW, this silver finish for the HTC Desire is teh sex:

It as arrived! Using my dealing nexus one to type this. Fuck yeah.

lulz. I should have at least looked at what it put in there.

Anyway, any particularly good games or apps I should get? So far al I have of note is Better keyboard and an NES emulator.

Robo Defense! It's one of the most popular games for a reason. Light Racer is a Tron light-cycle game. Opera Mini is a good browser but a bit buggy, I might switch to Dolphin. Handcent SMS is good if you don't like the build in SMS app. Meebo is so much better than the built in IM app, smaller font lets you see more messages with the keyboard up.

I didn't plan on replacing all the stock apps, it just sort of happened gradually

Keep in mind my experience is with an older version (1.6 I think), YMMV with the stock apps.

I might try out dolphin, but I quite like the stock browser and opera is no faster for me. Gonna go get those games now though.

Speed is the only reason I use Opera, I prefer the built-in one's interface (pinch zooming etc). So that may be a moot point on the Nexus One over my Hero.

EDIT: Posting from Dolphin, epic! Way too many features to try to describe on a phone keyboard. Opera = uninstalled.

Time to go try dolphin I guess. Also robo defense kicks ass.

EDIT: Just tried it out and while it's fast and seems nice, it keeps crashing on me. Sadface.

Now that I'm on a computer, I'll elaborate a bit: custom gestures, pinch zooming, faster than standard browser (not quite as good as Opera), nice tab interface (though I chose to auto-hide it for screen space), probably more that I haven't looked into. The pinch zooming is way smoother than on the standard browser, and it has a lot of advanced options for how it handles caching, cookies, etc.

Yeah, I'll have to give it another go.

So I tried Dolphin again and was once more not impressed, the stock browser really works well for me. The only problem I have now is I need a way to watch flash videos. I wanted to watch something on the NatGeo site, but I can't watch embedded flash. Also I want to watch porn. A video downloaded might work, but I didn't see anything very helpful looking on the market.

I really hate to use the Dolphin Browser too :S
It's a little faster but its very little....

HTC Sense comes with a flash player :p

So, anyone has a good suggestion for a cheap Android handset?
