You can see many birds do this just when they walk around. First they move their head into the new position, and then they walk their body inline with it. Then they more their head, then their body catches up.
It is a bit. A chicken has wings meant to support it's body, at least somewhat. If they would have just thrown the chicken out of the plane, it woul have fallen MUCH slower. I couldn't imagine that the birds wings didn't get damaged by being pulled down like that.
