'Bendy bicycle' that can be wrapped round lamp-posts wins design prize
A bicycle with a flexible frame that can be wrapped around lamp-posts to be locked up has won a design prize.

The bendy-framed bike was created by Kevin Scott, a final-year Product Design student at DeMontfort University in Leicester.

Where an ordinary bicycle's frame would have the crossbar and down-tube, Mr Scott's design has two segmented tubes, containing a cable. When the cable is tightened, using a ratchet device below the saddle, the frame is rigid and can be cycled.

However, when the bike is parked, the cable can be loosened, allowing the segments of the tube to separate and the frame to be bent through up to 180?.

This would let it be wrapped around a lamp-post and the two wheels to be locked together with an ordinary D-lock without removing them. It is both more secure and less space-consuming than locking an ordinary bike to a post by the frame.

The design won Mr Scott a runners-up award at the Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award and a cheque for ?500.

He now intends to bring it to market. He told The Register: "I intend to use the prize money to outsource production of some of the key components to allow for full testing."

I see the judges have never been to Toronto or on Youtube for that matter.

Segal is the Machete, I gues he dumped The Expendables and thought "WHAT HAVE I'V DONE!!!???", So he signed up for an another epic movie. If this is right, Van Dame should appear in in some sort of third epic movie. :D

"Introducing Don Johnson" Well, that be could right up there with The Expendables (though not quite, of course).

Great! a bike that's already broken in half! that's gonna save a hell of a lot of damage to your car when you run one of those lycrapricks over again :p

actualy the scale is way off........A deuce would be about 600-700 meters across from this angle, the span between those 2 bridge collums looks like alot more.

*end Star Wars nerd mode* :ninja:

Ah, Boneboy! Good to see you guys are still together!

Warning - Turn down the volume, the sound is quite distorted. Awesome nonetheless.

Actually the two main spans of the western part of the Bay Bridge are 700m, total length is just over 3100m, so the four arm spans are only slightly longer than half the main span. This means that the distance between those pillars is less than 800m.

Meh, sure your numbers are correct but still :dunno:
It just looks to big compared to the cars on the bridge.....then again maybee a deuce is just smaller in my head then in real life.

no ,wait......

The ISD is about parallel width-wise between the two spans of the bridge, and give what Adu said about the bridge spans, it's still wrongly scaled since an Imperator Class ISD is accepted to be between 900 and 1000m across depending on sources and while there might be a parallax error from this angle, it doesnt look like it surpasses either span on either side.

You know what your right, I mixed Mile and KM in my head, going from the idea that if a deuce is 'a mile long' it would be about a 3/4th of that acros.....but I took 3/4th of a Kilometer (600-700m) instead of 3/4th of a Mile

Pep up your food with this 2-in-1 Bird Salt & Pepper shaker. Twist the bird's head to the right to dispense salt, and to the left to dispense pepper. As a bonus, the bird's eyes will turn blue to indicate salt, and black to indicate pepper.

I would pay a large sum of money to see the cable system malfunction while someone is riding, turning their rigid bicycle into a hilarious limpy accident.

QFT, Actually the potential for epic fail is more awesome than the idea itself.
