Best Free Way to Convert Top Gear Episodes into iPod-friendly Format

As the title says, what is the best program to convert the .mkv Top Gear episodes to .mp4 or other iPod friendly formats? What programs do you guys use? I used to use a cracked version of WinAVI but since I got my new computer I don't have that anymore. Any information will be much appreciated.
 
I use Any Video Converter (yes, that's the actual name) to convert videos to MP4 format which work great on my Blackberry.
 
FormatFactory - easiest to use transcoder I have ever seen in my life. (windows only)
 
another vote for handbrake

fire it up, pick ipod from the profiles, press play. simple.
 
Or if you can't be bothered with any of this and only want to watch stuff you have on a local machine/server, try Air Video. :)
 
I was going to suggest Handbrake too, pff.
 
Still no divx/xvid support on the iPhone? The hardware is more than capable.
 
Anyone know of one for converting mkv to Avi for the Cowon D2?

No, only H264 MP4 pretty much. I'd still have to transcode it anyway because the SD Xvid rips of Top Gear are lower resolution than my phone by quite a bit. I downscale the 720p rips by just a little bit instead.
