Random thoughts.... [Tech Edition]

Huh, I would never have guessed looking at it, but that's a 1280 x 720 10" display. Not bad at all for the price. I just hope the Z530 Atom is up to the task of 720p video, my N270 at the same clock speed sure isn't :(

Yeah, that was one of the biggest draws for me. I find the HP Mini's performance adequate for what I usually do, but 1024x768 is just too cramped. And the Booklet is just plain sexy. I plan on overclocking to 1.9GHz.

You must really hate the 1024 x 600 screen it has, then :p

Indeed I must.

I just won one of these on eBay for $130 sans hard drive:

A Nokia Booklet 3G. I want to get an ssd for it since there is no way in hell I'm going to put a 4200rpm 1.8" spinner in there. Newegg has these two in my price range(100-150):
Crucial RealSSD C300 1.8" 64GB $145
OCZ Onyx Series OCZSSD1-1ONX32G 1.8" 32GB $105

To be honest, I only upped by budget to $150 because the Crucial was rather appealing, but I can't seem to find much info on these drives. Does anyone know of something in that range I should look at?

$130?! Damn why do I never have any luck finding cheap items on ebay...

There are like a million of them. In the past two days of fighting my unhealthy habit of impulse-buying, I've seen them go for $150-200. This one went for a bit less because it has no hard drive at all, but that didn't matter because I had no intention using the one that comes with it.

Hmm, I can't find any for some reason. My ebaying skills suck.

just booted up the old desktop and apparently it has forgotten the time/date in the BIOS.
Should I be worried?

CMOS battery died. Probably a CR2032 button cell unless it's really old. Should take 10 seconds to swap once you have the case open.

I have to remove my GFX card to get to the battery...

Why does the GTX 260 not have a HDMI port? Had to spend the best part of 2 hours in the scorching heat (not your silly 30C heat, proper 47C heat! :p) looking for an HDMI to DVI cable.

Now to enjoy GTA IV with everything on high...

I'm looking to get rid of my aerial and just have my satellite dish- is it possible to duplicate the aerials functions through the dish?

i.e. it's only use at the moment is providing terrestrial to watch whilst the Sky Box is in use or do I have the upgrade to multi room?

As far as I know with satellite you'll need a second box to watch another channel (basically one box per TV unless you run a splitter out of the box to multiple TVs in which case you'll see the same channel on each TV).

WOW that was a close one. I am setting up an old computer I was using for mom and seemed to have forgotten to delete the naked mans pictures D:

Your Mom doesn't like porn? :p

The way we're currently set up, an aerial lead comes from the aerial into the sky box, as do two from the LMBs on the Satellite dish. Two RF outs leave the sky box, one to the Samsung TV the sky box is directly plumbed into and the other travels all the way to the loft as an input, providing 4 tvs in the house with BBC one, two, ITV, Channel four, five and channel 6, which is whatever is being played on the sky box. We want to get rid of the aerial whilst retaining the same capabilities as we currently have.

ATI cards come with HDMI -> DVI adapters and support audio through them :p

I don't think most video cards have had built-in HDMI until very recently.

so you have "Aerial -> sky-box -> tv's"
And does Sky send the "normal" channels via satellite? if not, you cannot get rid of the aerial :(

My 4890s have both DisplayPorts and HDMI as well as a DVI.

On another note, I'm either looking for a really cheap 19" monitor or a nice 24-26" monitor within the next few months, either to add a second to my current 22" or to replace it and use the 22 as my second.
I like ViewSonic, and I don't care about TN/IPS, I just play games. I want HDMI, 1080P / 1920x1200, DVI, and no speakers. A tiny bezel would be nice, too :p

Got this for my brother a while back:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+20%22+Flat-Panel+LCD+Monitor/9754465.p?id=1218167408621&skuId=9754465

It's nothing too impressive but it absolutely cannot be beat for the price. If you go the secondary monitor route I can highly recommend it.

EDIT: Oh, and I also have a 4890, but it just has DVI ports. Maybe it differs by brand? (HIS here). I know I've seen at least 3 other ATI cards that came with the same adapters as mine, all HD3/4/5 series.

Double Edit: for an added bonus, that one is actually a newer model than the one I bought, but there's not much difference other than styling.

Sounds like the satellite box is just an inbetween for the aerial, it shouldn't really do anything. Any chance there are newer (digital) antennas you could use to replace the aerial? Here with our new standard digital TV signals you can get a digital antenna about the size and shape of a small dinner plate to pick up OTA TV signals.

Mine are both the last model 4890 that Sapphire made, afaik.
