The awesome boats thread

Look at the photo, with the wake it looks like someone is "unzipping" the ocean.

Haha, okay, that makes a lot more sense now. :)

Well, it was nice.

I'm a huge fan of cruise ships, and am I the only one not liking the direction in which they're heading? It always seems like the cruise compaines are looking at bigger (everything), more (of everything), and making a fairly ostentatious and vulgar ship in the process. Classic case in point; Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships.

Another one is the NCL's Norwegian Epic:

What happened with the classic, gracious beauty of the old ocean liners, the ones which are left around to rot... Like the SS United States and her sister ship, the SS America,

...which are currently in this state:

The SS America on the other hand...

I have to add that there are a lot of newer ships I like, from Royal Caribbean I do like the Radiance class ships

And I also like MSC's Ships

Although the RMS Queen Mary 2 is the closest you get to a modern version of the classic ocean liners

Cruize ships always smell like old people to me........But I agree on the ocean liners, they were creatures of beauty.

I don't think its realy fair to call ocean liners cruize ships anyway ..... liners actualy served a transportation purpose, as in : at first they were the only way to get from Europe to NorthAmerica and back ,often carrying people looking for a new life.
While cruize ships serve to bring fat wealthy tourists to exotic beaches where they can act obnoxious while the locals starve 5 miles away......big difference.

QFT. Or put more simply, old money vs new money. Offer me the chance to go back in time and cross the Atlantic one of of those gorgeous old girls, dressing for dinner every night and savouring the quality of the service and the fixtures and fittings and I'll bite your hand off.

Give me the choice between a modern cruise ship and a week of waterboarding and other heinous tortures and I'd be strapping myself to that plank!

Personally, I like Holland America's cruise ships.. because I've been on one or two of them.

Particularly the R-Class, not too big to be ostentatious, but still of a decently large size. They also look pretty good.

Old Boats: Took you TO your vacation in style and class...
New Boats: ARE your vacation...

Thats the difference. People told those old boats partly for the romance of a steam ship on the ocean but also because they wanted to get somewhere. Most current cruise ships don't go anywhere they leave one port go around in a big circle and then come back so they are getting more and more bloated with the things that designers think people want on a boat while they are floating around not even noticing they are on the ocean pretending they are getting to see the Caribbean while not actually seeing anything but tshirt shops and overpriced bars.

Blind I always liked the Wind Star Class though the royal clipper is a very pretty ship

Too big and they are made to be driven primarily by engines, not sails.

did we have this?

as well, pictures from my visit to Meyer Werft Papenburg

[snip - AIDAluna]
I saw her the other day while I was on a visit on the MSC Orchestra in Oslo. Her sister ship, the AIDAblu is coming to Oslo tomorrow btw...

There is some good news about the SS United States lately, the SS United States Conservancy has managed to rack up the unds to buy her off NCL and develop a plan for rebuilding her interior and make her a hotel ship / museum in New York of Philadelphia.

You can still cross the Atlantic Ocean on an ocean liner, Cunard has the RMS Queen Mary 2 for those purposes...

yes sailing ships are awesome.

but cruise liners? pfffffffffffff.

How about the USS Constitution, the thorn in the side of the Royal Navy during the War of 1812, and the oldest comissioned warship still afloat? (yes, I am aware the HMS Victory is like 30 years older, but when's the last time she went for a sail? :p)

Just seems like a goddamn cool way to blast down the Italian coast line in style.

Sorry for the bump, but Phyrefile finally started working for me again and I had been meaning to post these photos for weeks. I consider this boat & ship awesome, but I'm a bit biased.

USS Saipan (LHA-2)

The Tarawa class Amphibious Assault ship is not the biggest or fastest ship in the fleet, but when you spend 6 months straight on board one travelling across the Atlantic & Mediterranean in all sorts of weather it starts looking pretty awesome. I was heartbroken when I learned that she was to be scrapped.

This boat is identical to my stepdad's - with the exception of the word "Nasty" painted on the gunwale. It's a 25' 2004 Baja Outlaw, with a 496 cubic inch Mercruiser Magnum HO V8, pumping out 425 hp. I spent a week riding in that boat all around Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Talk about fun.

Guess what? You still can. And I will, someday.

Let's just stay clear of the North Atlantic this time; if I want ice I'll go in the breakroom and use the machine. ;)

Oh, and speaking of awesome boats:

* A 300 foot (91.5 meter) yacht
* Design derived from the symbol for infinity
* The main deck living room, and dining room are detached. Separated by a massive pool deck.
* The interior design: an intense minimalist palette with a dash of attitude.
* The main salon features generous 12 foot ceiling height and fully glazed walls creating an island within the yacht.
* Infinitas is designed to accommodate 12 guests and crew.

And a real one
