Awesome Thread... [Automotive Edition]

Nope. Glad you asked though because I dug up more info on the car. Its NOPRO's 13B-powered Miata that competed in the JGTC in the 90s.
http://www.nopro.jp/page/photo/photo.html
NOPRO/Kageisen Mazda Roadster.
It ran in 1998. AFAIK it only ever finished a JGTC race once, and was withdrawn from competition the following year.

Here's there result of the race it did mange to finish (entry highlighted):

It's also about 8-11 laps down on the GT500 entrants, so it was probably being lapped in that picture, unless somehow he manage to qualify ahead of the GT500s.

i'm gonna say something stupid, and defend the ram

give it the same size tires as the hummer, and the hummer wouldn't have it that easy

Obviously it's not lack of power that is hobbling the ram.

Crap roadtyres, an idiot driving it who doesn't understand the concept of torque ,an automatic (safe to assume seeing its a grey export) to little weight on the back, no locking diff's, lighter then the H1....there's quite a few things to choose from.

The H1 guy locked the 4 wheels, put it in 1Low and stepped out......

i could have this entirely backwards in my head but wouldn't larger tires reducing the torque available by giving you taller gearing??

On anything other than pavement those meaty offroad tires simply dig in a LOT better than road tires

Surely the torque sent to the wheels can't be different depending on wheel size? I mean, it takes more power to turn bigger wheels, which eats some of the torque that could be used to move the car.

.. Some thoughts on this please, it's screwing my head.

The bigger the wheel, the bigger the distance it covers per revolution given from the axle, and thus the less torque it will have, thats the theory.....what would help (and that's the hummers big strongpoint) is a diff with a lower end ratio, = more torque , less speed.

Offcourse there is the simple issue of a bigger tyre at a slighty reduced pressure having simply more surface and more profile on the ground then a smaller one on unpaved surfaces, so this means more grip.

My dad and and his friend did once a tug-of-war with a Land Cruiser and Jeep Commander. Unofortunatly the Jeep won. I have it on tape but have had difficulty of transfering it on the computer.

The Ram driver doesn't know how to start off in the snow and we all have no idea what tires are on which vehicles but nonetheless that was a good pwn

that test isn't about torque, it's about grip and getting power on the ground

and the bigger the wheels, the more torque can be applied before the wheels start slipping

Car Pr0n inside!
