I never understood why they didn't start production as soon as they were done with Quantum. Surely, if your company is in financial trouble, you'd want to get a movie that will bring in ~$500mm as quickly as possible. It would be out, or nearly so, by this point if they had.
The pre-production of a Bond-scale movie takes some time. As far as i understood, they started pre-production after finishing up on Quantum (one post-production is done and the film is released, the production team still has lots of paperworks, accounting, etc to wrap up) in late 2009, until MGM had to pull the plug in mid-2010 due to lack of funds/perspective.I think it was because MGM was in truly bad shape. They were millions in the red, no upfront finance to back a significant investment like Bond, basically all they had were the copyrights they owned for their properties. They were desperately looking for a buyer or financier. No director/producer is going to step into a production like that.
My favourite Bond files are Gold finger and Goldeneye but hey that is just me.
This had better work, They are counting on this and the Hobbit movie to single (double?) handledly save the studios. "All in", and all that...
A year to produce a Bond film? That's a bit ambitious isn't it?
I personally preferred Quantum, because as Viper said Casino seemed to go on forever to me, I would've been quite happy if the Venice part didn't exist.
No that was the N64 game you are thinking of.Nearer to two years - slated for release Nov 2012 to coincide with the 50th anniversary.
I'm the opposite on the two most recent. I thought Casino was excellent as a reboot, and the whole Vesper/Venice thing was essential to explain and set out why Bind is who he is ie a borderline alcoholic/mysogenist psychopath which is the actual character Fleming created. The movies have always been about him being a smooth and capable hero with few if any flaws.
Quantum on the other hand while necessary suffered from the same problem as Goldeneye. A stack of set pieces then suddenly you're at the end where everything explodes. It was too short, poorly directed and the story just didn't hang together.
Let's just hope Craig's third outing is the one where he gets to realise his and the revamped franchise's potential. If not I fear for Bond's future in the cinema.
So... any bets on locations, chicks or gadgets? I'm hoping for NYC, Southeast Asia and a One-77. We all know that the One-77 is perfect here.

Mine was The Living Daylights, but thats mostly because it was the first Bond film i had seen at the cinema. Before that i had only seen them on the tv or on video.
Well i assume the girl is going to be Olivia Wilde since she was attached to the produciton before they shut it down. There were also rumors of Freida Pinto (slumdog millionaire girl) but i think those were unsubstantiated. Unless of course this is going to be an all new production and the work put into the previous bond 23 is just being scrapped in which case who the hell knows.
