Do all diesel pistons look like that?


Not all, in fact the piston on a VW vanagon wasserboxer (normal gasoline) looks remarkably similar. The recess on I4 VW TDI's is a bit deeper and not as wide, these exist as an area for the injector to fire fuel into. On indirect injection diesels they generally have a flat top piston or with slight valve reliefs. Every engine is different, depends on what they are trying to accomplish.
 
When I pulled apart a big tractor trailor diesel motor in school a few years back it had flat top pistons.
