So just pressing F5 at the gallery viewer and getting the old gallery view with that - then rightclicking with Firefox and copying the image's URL, then viewing only that pic and saving it from there doesn't just work?
 
I think people are missing the fact that the download button lets you download a high res version of the picture, not viewable otherwise...
 
Also, all it does is link to the jpg file that everyone can access anyways, given knowledge of the URL.

I believe the download option gives you access to a higher quality version (stored on FB when first uploaded, but not normally displayed).
