Hey, LP - *hugs* How many programmes did you apply to?
I wouldn't take it personally, especially in this day and age. So many people going back to school right now with reduced/shitty job options, so there's obviously increased competition. As well, I'm sure you know it can often come down to supervisors liking another applicant's proposal more. With the amount of research you have under your belt, you're an absolutely stunning candidate for grad school, and GPA doesn't play AS HIGH a part as many seem to think in grad applications. I'd buck up, ask for feedback on your applications if possible as to reasons why you didn't get in, and do all you can for the next round of applications. Easier said than done, sure, but you still have plenty of time and this IS going to happen. Just will.
Am currently waiting to hear about a PhD programme myself! Could hear any time in the coming weeks. If I don't get in, I'm chalking it up to my proposal, and will get all the feedback I can in order to make myself more attractive for a Spring 2012 start. Sometimes it can take a couple of years to get into a programme; the fully paid/salaried Bournemouth PhD I applied for last year? Came second out of sixty applicants... *headdesk*
