Pictures Of My New Apartment

882 sq ft. :)

May I ask how much a month that place is? Down near me that amount of room and square footage will be in the low $1000s :(

I dislike Southern California and California in general.

$1040/mo plus utilities.

What does low $1000s mean and where in SoCal?

Here in Milan you have to pay over $1000 for 325 sq feet, so to pay the same amount for almost 900 sq ft is damn cheap!

Follow up question, how much would a 1000sqft'ish house with a double garage cost in a decent SoCal area (between Burbank and Long Beach)?

You're looking at about $2,000 for a house in a decent area probably. I'm not sure how easily you will find a 1,000 sq. ft. house though, houses are often bigger than that in North America.

You probably want to narrow down the area in which you want to live in SoCal, this is important for various reasons. The area between Burbank and Long Beach is huge, so you will find lots of different monthly rates in that area. Burbank is in the Valley, and the Valley has considerably cheaper rent than say, West LA.

The area between Burbank and Long Beach covers a huge part of LA County. I would pick a neighbourhood first, and then go about finding a decent place in that area specifically. You really want to work and play in the same part of SoCal, it just doesn't work any other way... which is why rent is so expensive, it's not as easy to move out to cheaper suburbs and bedroom communities because then you'd spend most of your day (and your sanity) on the commute.

$1,000 in SoCal? Not much unless you're going to get a roommate.

For that much, you can get a 600-700 sq. ft. apartment in an old rental complex in a decent (safe and comfortable, not glamorous) part of the West LA.

Like I said your money goes a bit further in the San Fernando Valley, and I didn't really figure out why it was cheaper other than it gets a few degrees hotter in the summer. But the Valley is still expensive, LA is just an expensive place when it comes to housing.

It depends on the perception. ;)

Here at the border of Hamburg I pay ~525$ for ~525 sq ft (381 Euro for 49 m?), excluding electricity, heating and incidental expenses which add up to ~230$. 10 km into the city in a more posh neighbourhood and you pay 1500$ or even more for that.

Other considerations are year of construction and maybe modernisation, if it is in a apartment building or multi-family house, in which neigbourhood the house is, smaller apartments sometimes cost more per sq ft etc etc.

How about the porn? Altough why that would make it cheaper makes no sense, I admit :D

That doesn't sound bad to me at all. You'd be very lucky to find a place for $1 per square foot in a city like Los Angeles or Vancouver... hosing is cheap in most large North American cities compared to Europe, but certain cities like LA have housing markets that are overinflated and quite unaffordable.

:p

They make a lot of TV shows in the Valley as well as porn, so if anything, rent should be higher there since it would work out well for all the people working in the film industry.

Oh, avanti, how about Orange County? Its only drawback to LA proper is distance... if you don't need to travel far into LA County often, I would take a look at some of the cities in Orange County. You will find newer developments for less money, and an overall more residential type of a feel compared to many cities in LA County.

Cleaned my flat the other day so I thought I'd snap a few pics. It has two bedrooms although I'm using one as an ironing/storage room. It's a bit bare but comfortable enough at the moment. When I can be bothered I'll get around to replacing the couch.

And the view over the back fence looking East towards Sydney.

I call shenanigans, the pictures aren't upside down.

Thread hijack!

Thread hijack!

And so shameless!

I suppose we do need a thread to post pictures of our abodes though... I never bothered to post pictures of my current place for a variety of reasons but I might be moving soon and this new place would be too good not to share.

I cannot wait till someone posts some place super swanky and someone asks for proof. I don't know why I said that...:hmm:
