Cool Videos

Arguably much more entertaining than some actual baseball games I've attended:

The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg (a.k.a. the world's biggest model railway) has a brandnew section added to the existing layout: An airport.

This will take a bit of explaining: I'm a member of AFS Germany, whose purpose is this:

AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
That's mostly exchanges for students and young adults. Earlier this month, we had a big internal training weekend with loads of workshops and a couple of international guests. One of these was the managing director of the Egyptian branch of AFS who gave this opening speech (suitable for a wider audience than AFSers):

This is one of the greatest things i have ever seen!! wow Think of how many man hours went into that and the engineering involved.

Well, they've been developing and building that airport section for 6 years. Obviously they had to come up with a completely new technology to make the model planes start, land and taxi their way automatically.

Here's a video (in German), that explains the starting/landing technology:

Last year the MiWuLa celebrated its 10th anniversary. Since the first opening in 2001 they added section after section, this airport being the latest one, and there is no way they're going to stop there. It has become a major tourist attraction, with about 1.1 million visitors each year. I've been there three times so far.

The whole construction process is documented in weekly reports since October 2000. If you have a lot of time, you can check that here.
