Anyone else tired of reboots, particularly when they're the worlds quickest reboots?

X-Men Trilogy 2000-2006
First Class 2011 (Is Wolverine, part of the trilogy cannon?)

Spiderman Trilogy 2002-2007
The Amazing Spiderman 2012

The trilogies weren't bad... ok Spiderman 3 had it's issues. Wasn't one of the X Men films a little bad too?

Hulk 2003
Incredible Hulk 2008

Fantastic 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer 2007
Fantastic 4 In development

Superman Returns 2006
Man of Steel 2012

Weirdly they're all comic book characters.

The Bourne Ultimatum 2007
The Bourne Legacy 2012 (Not Robert Ludlum, so not Bourne)

Some things need rebooting, after 44 years James Bond needed it... and it turned out great. Same goes for Batman and Star Trek, fantastic reboots. A-Team wasn't bad.

I tried thinking of other good film reboots, instead all I could think of were terrible ones.

Karate Kid
Yogi Bear
The Pink Panther

Its not just films, video games do it as well I'm sure Lara Croft is on her 2nd reboot?
They've tried rebooting Sonic, every 6 months since 1997 and it's never worked. Mortal Kombat is kinda reboot. NBA Jam, Twisted Metal.

Whilst i'm rambling on, lets talk TV shows.
Seth MacFarlane is bringing back The Flintsones, I love Seth MacFarlane, but lets be honest he could ruin that easily... I guarantee he voices Fred and Barney and Dino. <_<

The Knight Rider reboot was getting good, when they rebooted it episode 9.
Hawaii 5-0 is back.
Charlies Angels is coming back
They tried Wonder Woman and Bionic Woman.
Dallas is coming back.
CHIPS is coming back.

I guarantee one day, someone will reboot The Simpsons... and on that depressing note.

Reboots and remakes are the 'thing' now with Hollywood. the'yve realised there's a audience they can sell to and who will more than likely watch a remake of something they enjoyed previously. Its happening everywhere. Battlestar Galactica was a remake (an awesome one though and a textbook example of how to remake something in the spirit of the original and yet come up with something completely different).
The only times a reboot or remake is successfull is when the director and the people behind it are fully aware of what has gone on before, understand it and come up with something that is respectful to the previous showing. This is why i'm doubtful about the Spider-Man remake. They aren't paying attention to the established lore of the comic book and just doing something completely different. You only have to look at the mess that became of the Catwoman film to realise that its not a smart move. Its also the reason why i'm not bothered about the X-Men reboot either. They've taken the concept of the First Class comic book (which was made up of the original X-Men Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman) and then ran with something completely different. Emma Frost wasn't even around at that point in time (also you'll remember how Emma Frost also appeared in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film, how they will tie up that plot hole is beyond me).
I seriously worry about the Superman reboot. I know that Nolan is somewhat "involved" in it and they've got a cast of decent actors (Amy Adams=Lois Lane, Kevin Costner=Jonathan Kent and so on) but its the director. Zack Snyder's recent forays have been... well bad to put it bluntly. i don't mean bad as in "oh well, thats a shame" i mean bad as in "how the hell do Warner Bros keep employing Zack Snyder?!" His Watchmen / 300 adaptions were laughable (yes i liked Watchmen the film, but the comic book is so much better and it was all the better because it didn't have heroes in latex). His recent film Sucker Punch bombed badly and i'm worrying a lot about Man of Steel. Superman is such a iconic character and one of DC Comics big three (the others being obviously Batman and Wonder Woman). If they don't get it right and Snyder does his usual, Superman in latex punching everything in slow motion then its going to make DC Comics and Warner Bros. become a laughing stock.
Also i hate Seth MacFarlane, the guy is not funny, he can't write to save his f***ing life and getting him behind the Flintstones remake just stinks of desperation. All of his shows are the same and i shudder at what he's going to do with the Flintstones. Dino is probably going to start talking and Pebbles will be some kind of self obsessed bitch. Much like Zack Snyder, someone needs to show MacFarlane the door and ban him from ever being allowed to write televison.

Reboots will most likely stay for quite a while now since there's so much material that they can keep bringing back, wait a few years and then try again. The real danger is Hollywood stops making original stuff, they view something as being so new that no one would be interested in it because no one had knowledge of it.

I know i can't bitch too much though. even my favorite tv series Doctor Who has been rebooted. The launch of the 2005 version of the show can widely be seen as a reboot since it re-introduced the show to new viewers but also was respectful to the previous 26 year series.

Did you ever watch an episode of the original Mission: Impossible? It was pretty dire. The movies however were pretty good, especially the first two.

Bond reboot worked for one film. QoS was dreadful. And the recent reboot of The Prisoner with Jim Catweazle? Not even Sir Ian McKellen could save that one.

I was really gutted the new Knight Rider got cancelled. The uncredited Val Kilmer was excellent as KITT and there was a raunchiness to it that the original never had. I guess that was the problem. Too niche for adults and not suitable for people you could sell toys to. Shame.

jedd is right about Dr Who. Has to be about the best TV reboot ever. It could have been a huge pile of epic fail but it isn't.

There is a finite number of ideas for characters and plot and high costs and less money means it's better to play it safe and go with things you know have worked in the past. They won't all work but the odds are significantly improved.

And as for reusing ideas......

The Seven Samurai.........The Magnificent Seven..........Battle Beyond the Stars.........Bug's Life........... anyone see a pattern there? ;)

true, but if it hadn't been for Battle Beyond the Stars i wouldn't have ended up seeing The Magnificent Seven and The Seven Samurai, both two excellent films.

You know what needs a reboot? ReBoot. That show was a the bomb and ahead of its time, and will be even more relevant now in this tech-saturated age.

I honestly clicked on this thread thinking it was about that show.

Were you as gutted as I was that Napoleon Solo wasn't in the latter?

Bond may be cool, but the Man from U.N.C.L.E. will always be sub zero......

So did I, remember when cartoons were either funny talking animals or space based shows of epic win? oh the classics

I've really liked a lot of the recent ones like Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Batman, and the new Bond films. I think basically all the reboots have been an improvement on the origionals- except the ones on network television. They're just hopeless.

Which, apparently, may be made into a film.

Mission Impossible was a 30 year reboot done well.

QoS was a bad Bond film, theres always been bad Bond films.

When they rebooted Knight Rider at about episode 9, that was the show it should have been from the start. I don't want him working along side 400 people.
It's Michael, KITT, some kind of Stephanie and a Devon-type.

Hulk 2003
Incredible Hulk 2008

From what I understand, Incredible Hulk was Marvel bringing the franchise back under their roof (and into the subsequent Avengers story line), and if I remember right, they handwaived the first movie, a way of recognizing it happened, but pretending it didn't. I really wish Marvel could get the Spiderman IP back from Sony and make the movies themselves, because they've shown they know their own stuff better than other studios and can actually crack the whip if someone tries to take 'artistic liberties' with their works.

Someone should Reboot '2001 a space odessy', properly (i.e. not 2010 which was not quite with it.)

I always love to think "How would x great classic film look like with today's film budgets and special effects." However, its impossible, because I'd want these films to be done by the original crew (or at least someone as enthusiastic and true to it as I would be), and current Hollywood likes to take too many 'artistic liberties' with everything, even if easlily researched history proves them wrong (see: Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo [1944], Tora! Tora! Tora! [1970] vs. Pearl Harbor [2001]).

+1, absolutely loved that show when I was younger. Was absolutely gutted when I missed the final episode in the series, have never been able to find it to this day. If anyone knows of a torrent or anything with all the episodes I'm sure several of us would be +rep in a heartbeat......... ;)

The torrents are out there.

My buddy is obsessed with this show, and he has all the seasons downloaded on his comp. I'll ask him where he got them.

Casino Royale was an ok film, but it lacked a car chase and a bond film needs a car chase, and I don't like Daniel Craig as Bond. QoS was dreadful.

Yeah, I said the same thing, cancelled just as it was getting good, it was never going to win any Emmys but in the end it showed some warmth and potential. Both things that weren't present when the show took itself uber serious.

I agree with you and Aston Martin. I loved the new Knight Rider after the midseason reboot. It had finally gotten to the point that it should have been at all along. The whole CIA management thing was stupid. I had a few other nitpickings about it. The biggest other thing was, why did KITT have to go from cool GT500 to "OMG 12 Ricers just got ahold of this car"? I liked the Pursuit mode of the car in the Pilot, but then it just got silly with the supercharger intake and the neon lights that said KR under the car.

Although, funnily enough, the original KITT's Super Pursuit mode caused more drag than the car had in its stock trim.. so it would have been much slower :)

Didn't he have rockets/turbines in super pursuit mode?

Also did Conan the barbarian warrant a reboot?
