The famous rally has started!!!

My compatriot Carlos is putting on a good performance! The other Carlos is proving, again, his qualities as well!

I also read about Robby Gordon's exquisite maneuver at the podium!

I have been reading up some reports, and I have to say that the maFIA, ASOle, and company, in their infinite wisdom did not allow the Dutchmen start the rally!

How are you all keeping with the rally?

By the way, where is Bihus? Hopefully, he did not get himself in front of one of the cars on their to Portim?o!

I used to watch it on SPEED, until I moved to this area and SPEED became a premium channel. Blah!

I'm following it again this year like I did last year. Downloading each one everyday :).

Can you share the source?

Luckily I can watch it on Eurosport and RTL7 everyday.
But the question of DAF vs FIA/ASO is not over, I understand the lawyers are busy

So I'm guessing there will be more as it progresses ;)

Thanks for the link. :)

Yeah, I'm leeching the srutineering vid now, but there doesn't seem to be any seeds?

Another thanks here!

Does anyone know anything about the DeRooy team situation, besides what is posted on their website?

Oh, here is the man:

Nissan, if you are reading this, he is Portuguese, not Spanish. Idiots...

The other men:

Even when racing, americans can not do without their chrome: :D

Th Bekx team is expected back home today with the trucks arriving later today.

It sucks for them and the DeRooy team!

Speaking of out of luck, I just found out that they imposed a 12minute penalty on Ruben Faria (KTM). Apparently, he arrived late at the start of the second stage because he could not pay for his fuel at some gas station.

Speed lost their bid for coverage last year to OLN and aren't carrying it this year, either. It's a huge change, as Speed aired an hour of coverage each day as opposed to OLN's half an hour. OLN is also quite biased towards American competitors, though it seems less so this year so far (maybe because Robbie Gordon didn't finish in the top 10 on stage 1), whereas Speed talked to anyone, even if they needed to be translated. Had Robbie started in 2003, who knows how biased Speed's coverage would have become, though? :p

Speaking of Robbie, his H3 sure is interesting. Looks kinda like one of Toyota's trucks, except flattened.

I'm very happy to see Carlos Sainz win stage 1 and I hope he can keep it up. Can't expect that to last the whole way, but in a rally where just finishing is an accomplishment, this is quite a start.

One crazy thing I saw was an American team driving a Chevy Silverado...with no windscreen! That just seems foolish. Maybe they have a plexiglass windscreen tucked away somewhere for when they really need it.

Oh, and there's also a team from the U.S. racing on a heavily modified Harley V-Rod! It has a side car, too. Check out this pic:

Here's their site: http://www.hogwildracing.com/dakar2006/

Anyone got to see the Harley sidecar as yet? I'm still wondering how it will go on the dunes...

:)

They showed it briefly on a road, with the passenger leaning to the side around corners. I can see it having both disadvantages and advantages in the dunes.
