Covid 19 CRISIS

We're all in this together. The economy is shit globally. It'll pick up closer to the summer.
That's true but people still need to eat, pay bills, etc. I'm more worried about that than the health risks right now, tbh.

In two months we might not have an economy - think 50% unemployment, housing foreclosures far worse than 2008, all small businesses gone. We absolutely need to get the economy going again as soon as possible but we just don't know what a realistic timeline is. I would guess that Easter is probably too optimistic but who knows;
That's where the whole bailout thing comes into play, can't have an economy when people are getting sick and not going to work.
not sure where you're getting two months from but I hope you're wrong.
I'm looking at China/Italy mostly.

And without so much as a phlemy courtesy spit.

Meanwhile, my town is up to around 20 cases now, although only 1 required hospitalization.

If the US had started to fight it aggressively earlier on maybe be like China, late December to early April.

US is is doing nothing like that. Yesterday NY did 12k tests. Ireland with 10% of the population did 12k! Some states haven't started testing properly or doing contact tracing.

Don't see how you get a handle on this without testing and contact tracing.

Dr Mike Ryan of the WHO said during the ebola outbreak in the Congo they contact tracing 25k a day, in a war zone.

Unless Trump and Pence go into isolation, hard to see the end.

Just harrowing to watch Gov Cuomo pleas for help largely going unanswered and will get less if he doesn't talk nice about Trump. They took $15billion off allocation for NY in Stimulus bill, NY might get only $3billion!

It's almost like the response to this slow-motion train wreck is the problem. Other nations, like South Korea, got out ahead of it with an aggressive testing routine, enforced social distancing, and a massive influx of spending into their healthcare system (which you've called socialism). This administration was warned about Novel Coronavirus in January, it was on our radar last year, and the very people whose jobs it was to spot and respond to exactly this type of scenario were fired because it was good business. I'm not going to get into the timeline of rhetoric about this pandemic, that's been extensively covered elsewhere.

This was avoidable. The human and economic devastation could have been minimized with a timely and appropriate response. Instead, we are at a point where official briefings from our leadership are not even being aired by some media outlets because the lies are costing lives.

You can't separate the two, LeVeL. Trump and his administration are responsible for responding to this, you can't talk about COVID-19 in the US without also talking about the response from his administration, the CDC, and various state agencies. Just because he's making you look bad doesn't mean you get to decide what we can and cannot discuss.

Anyway, didn't you rage-quit and put me on ignore a while ago?

I did have you on ignore but then I decided to opt-out of the political section instead - much easier that way.

I'm just sick and tired of the constant political BS on this site, although I realize that I'm partly at fault for it - still, I'm trying. I really don't feel like arguing the pros and cons of the US response for the next thirty pages - we already know we won't agree, so why even bother? Just post virus-related information and leave the political opinions out of this thread.

Two more cases in my town today, including a coffee shop employee. Shit.

Sorry, bud, but you don't get to decide what is a valid topic. Government responses around the world are on the table for discussion; those policies directly affect the infection rate and suitability of this virus.

What are you on about again? US and SK have very similar numbers of cases and deaths per 1mil population.

Today, yes.
In a few days, unlikely.

Cases according to JHU as of now, US on the right/bottom:

Population is about x6, but so is the scale.
I hope the US can slow down its exponential growth, but considering it takes a week or more from date of infection to showing up in the statistics it's likely to continue for a while.
Second thing to consider, SK has a much better test coverage in terms of percentage of population tested so their numbers are much more realistic while the US likely has a huge infected-but-untested population.
